I am not convinced. It sounds good, but aint all the way. There are a lot of people that are almost there... ;)

+1

EVH 1st said his amp wasn't modded (the truth IMHO)

Later, he said that Jose modded it ( true, again IMHO, Jose modded it for 6550's)

for all the doubters :

I bet if I could build a time machine go back in time and "borrow" EVH's step-up from the studio on the day VH1 was recorded

then transport it back to today, invite all of you over to check my
out my "NAD" and tell ya "I scored a vintage plexi from off craigslist"

without a doubt there would be a handful of you that would say "sounds good "- "really close" - "not convincing at all"

I get that

I'm just thinking of all the time (decades) people have been debating this in threads and the years tonefreaks have been
modifying this and modifying that to cop the EVH tone (not to mention the $$ we all spent falling prey to sales pitches and "rumours" of amps that do EVH to a "T".

and now 39 years later there it is IMO

a freaking slaved fender & marshall

I agree with Marshall Law "who would have thought" !

its so simple, it just can't be, right ?

to the believers :

how freaking cool is that - Fender & Marshall a match made in Heaven !

Top Notch Cool in my book

I was shocked that only very few members at metroamp feel as strongly I do - this is the TONE minus the studio embellishment

Original Thread LINK (for RGalpin see page 3)

that why I posted it here - RGalpin deserves Major League Props for
posting this at Metro

:worship: RGalpin

there's plenty of R-T guys who hang at Metro and have known about slaving for years.

not sure the context of what RGalpin did there? but guessing it's more about screwing around and proving a point, than flatout claiming he's got it nailed.

what he did was sure enough close and cool, but guys are getting that close with George's box stock 12000's.

and i don't give shit what anybody says. Tone is damn sure in the fingers! :gethim: the guys getting close are copping the feel as much as using the right tools.

but yea! cool thread, and EVH is allways good for a cat fight!

A dude named Rockstah has gotten as close to the old EVH tone as anyone I know. He's gotten so good at it he can make other amps sound pretty dang close. He's just using Marshalls or marshall based amps. No slaved this or that.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=503988&content=music

Again, I think it's cool that a bassman into a plexi can produce that sound, but it's not THE sound.

I had an old Guitar Player mag from around '80 with EVH on the cover, black and yellow strat, where he stated that his favorite tone at the time was using an old Bassman but using the extention cabinet speaker jack instead of the normal speaker jack. He said it lowered the volume a lot so he could crank the amp without it being too loud.

This Bman > Marshall makes sense, and it parlays into the Marshall > Load Box > H & H Pwr amps

Would you still need to provide a load to the normal speaker out when using the extension out?

Just for shits and giggles I tried a similar setup in Revalver the other night: Ran the preamp of a "Basic 100" into an "ACM 900" and had amazing results!!! Granted, I added a "green screamer" and some stereo imaging effects, but it sounded 90% there.

cool ! - post it somewhere & link me, I'd like to hear it

I know theres a lot of luv for Revalver - I need to get a copy someday

what version did you use II or III ?

Remember that the original Marshall amps, such as the JTM45, was heavily based on the Fender Bassman amp.

So it's basically just "Marshall"-> Marshall, or Fender->"Fender". One amp used to overdrive another amp.

I actually think it makes commonsense, at least for 1978. Instead of mucking around with mods, why not just run one amp into the other to get it to overdrive? You could say it was the forerunner of the cascading gain stage preamp, hence the six preamp valves in the 5150, or Soldano SLO.
