I've made several attempts to try to use ear plugs while playing, but the sound muffling is so bad, I can't get used to it. Any of you have any recommendations on what ear plugs to look at to where the sound coming through is clean, not muffled?

I like Hearos Hi Fidelity ear plugs.
Tried and true.

I like the Surefire earplugs. They were designed so soldiers could hear conversations, but suppress loud noises like gunfire. They have a pretty even noise reduction across frequencies and you can insert or remove the outer plug for more/less attenuation. They are comfortable, and discreet if you get them in the clear color. They have a few levels of earplugs but I've been happy with the basic EP3 set.

I had custom molds done and got Sensaphonic plugs made. Replaceable filters that come in 3 different Db drop levels.
No matter what you do there is some getting used to as it will always be different. For me a lot of it is mind over matter. My biggest issue is feeling a bit disconnected from the crowd.
