curious what you guys like and why? I have a few myself (sm57,i5,e609) and im looking to get a few more...

I like to pair and ev n/d468 with a shure sm57.

A sennheiser md421 is another popular guitar mic.

I like a Royer R121 paired with an SM57

That royer r121 looks awesome, but it alone costs more any any amp I own.

Heil PR30.

What he said... and there's one for sale here! *cough*. :)

I'll cough up for an R121 one of these days.... When it comes down to it, you still can't really go wrong with a 57. Just get it pointed where it needs to be, other mics aren't so picky about placement.

121 + I5. I hate the 57 regardless the track record. It's graininess and fuzziness got smoothed out in the past with fantastic analog gear. It's too harsh in today's digital world IMO.

You know I've gathered a pile of mikes over the years, and I think a 57 at the right spot through the right mic-pre can get some great tones. The Royer sounds nice and smooth and big, but not necessarily aggressive. I just add a little bit of the 57 in there to give it a bit of snarl on top of what I like about the royer. Isolate the track, and the 57 by itself dosent really sound good because I have it in a position that is more focused on adding some teeth, but all teeth is not really what I go for either. I've wasted enough money on "do it all" mikes over the years to more than pay for the royer, but I dont think its the magical answer to everything that some do. I dont care for it on acoustics or for overheads on drums, but some people swear by them for that. My AKG 414 Kills it for sheer detail on acoustics and overheads, but sucks at doing 412 cabs.
I'm finding that combo's of mikes can get you more of what your after in the end, but thats just my opinion. If I had to use 1 mike on a 412, it would be a Bock that I got last year, but I prefer the 121/57 combo over that for what we are currently working on. I will say the Bock kills anything I've heard yet as a room mike, its absolutely huge sounding, but its more money than the royer :aww:
I think its a great time to get mikes of any type, competition has forced them to come up with some amazing ribbon mikes for not much money.... but I'd likely still add a beat to hell, cheap old 57 in there with it, the things that most people hate about them are the very thing I was looking to add to the body and smoothness of the royer. I'm sure there are some combo's that are less that sound fantastic, but I havent found 1 mike that can do what that combo can.
I'm optimistic though, the mike world is ever changing for the better, as is the other black hole of mike-preamps
It just sucks that I have so little money :(
Dam......

Blend of an R121 and 57. Substitute the 57 for a 421 if you feel so inclined.

Recently did a session with a KSM-32 blended with a 57; both on the same speaker. Sounded good.

I just ordered an Audix D2 and a Heil PR20.
They both start boosting at 1kHz and start rolling off at 5kHz.
Flat by 10kHz.
They also boost 150Hz 2 or 3dB.
I'm hoping these will capture the mids that I feel I've been missing.
This matches up well to the frequency response of my V30 speakers.
I only use standard tuning and Drop D from time to time.
I also use passive, vintage output humbuckers.
I can't wait to try them. I have a feeling that I'm on to something here.

I really dig the SM7b. I have borrowed a R121 but it really needs to be paired with something like a SM57 to really shine.

The usual suspects:
-SM57
-MD421
-Beyer M201N
-Royer R121
-EV RE-20
-Shure SM7B

Aside from the Royer, I got all of them. My only ribbon at the moment is a cheap MXL R144.

I just bought a heil pr30 looks to be a good all round mic I can use for drums and vox too, forget the royer that aint happening wayyy too expensive...

I was going to suggest the 7B as well. Works especially well with lower tunings/bass......and of course, screaming vocals!
