So I've been paying my 87 Jubilee using my torpedo live and it's amazing even with headphones.
I'm using a pair of on ear headphones from Heil called pro 3 set.

Most of the time I stop playing because my ears hurt from the headphones so it's now time to buy a pair of over the ear headphones.

I'd like to get the best pair possible because 99% of the time I'm playing this way and it's great.
I'd like to spend no more than $700 and of course I'd like to spend less if possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a set of AKG K-701 open back reference headphones that work pretty well. After a break-in period they sounded better than when new. I did a lot of research before settling on them about a year ago. Lots of mixed reviews, but I think that is in comparison to much higher end headphones. They are reference type monitoring headphones so they are geared to try to be "accurate" and can sound harsh at times because of that.

Anyway, I use them for mixing and sometimes plugged into my AxeFx2 and I think they sound great. New $450 on Sam Ash right now, but you can find them cheaper. I also bought a JDS Headphone amp. I'm not sure how the torpedo live would drive them, but they needed an amp to push the headphones when plugged into my Duet on the laptop. They were low volume and thinner sounding without the JDS amp.

Your budget, I think anything in that range is going to sound good. I like the open back though because they don't accent the lows as much so your settings should translate better when you play without the headphones. But I would definitely think about saving some room/$$ for a nice headphone amp to go with whatever you get.

Just get a pair of Sony MDR-7506's. They're comfortable and sound nice, and if you want to replace the earcups at anytime Beyerdynamic cups are the same size so you can replace them. New for like $80 on amazon.

I went from a super high end pair of AKG K812's using solely to play my Axe Fx through to a pair of Blu Mofi's. While there was a huge difference in sound quality the Mofi's definitely hold their own for almost 1/3 the price. I can't recommend the Mofis enough, they are a great set of cans with AMAZING customer service. My dogs chewed through the cables and Ive called them 2x now and theyve sent me new cables quick, no questions asked

The HD280's previously mentioned are a good call. Not top of the line by any means, but great bang for the buck. I have a pair and they work well and are comfortable. With the kind of money that you have to spend, why not get a quality set of in-ears and custom molds? That would give you long-term comfort when wearing them plus accurate reproduction. Plus, you'd be set for stage...
