Looking for the best product to clean an oiled maple fingerboard. Is there a way to get the dark stains that come from usage?

Why would you want to clean it?

The dirt gives an oiled maple board character and frankly, oiled maple boards look great when you can see the black marks from finger sweat.

I have two Wolfgangs and a PC-1. Nothing really gets them to like new again. I use 0000 steel wool to polish the frets and clean the board every few string changes...

Mask off neck and body. Tape off the frets, sand with 220 to bare wood and respray with satin lacquer. It's actually not very difficult.Comes out like new. Otherwise live with it. You can't really clean it. Steel wool will just leave many scratches.

I don't know about getting the stains out, but I always use F1 oil on all my unfinished boards

Keep the stains & relish in the effort it took for you to put them there

0000 steel wool doesn't leave any scratches on an oil finished board...

I am no luthier nor do I have experience in wood crafting/cleaning or what have you.

From talking with luthiers, working along side wood workers with many years experience, and using the method myself,
I will pass it on.. luke warm water and a lint free cloth.

Nothing more, nothing less. My warmoth maple neck is going on 8 years now, works and looks fine using this same method all these years.
