Ah I thought you meant the 12-56 might not be tight enough :ROFLMAO: I like the feel of the 56 so I probably won't go lighter than that, but Iommi got great tones with 9s tuned low!
I use a custom 13-64 set with a wound 3rd in C std. Keeps the tone punchy and clear, but not too stiff.

Mighty Might Motherbucker 4203 23k. You don't want some weak ass beta 16k pickup.

I got an alder superstrat recently that came stock with duncan distortions

Sounds great to me tuned low

Part of your problem could be the 12-56 strings to be honest - what's the scale length of your guitar?
Was going to actually recommend these, considering he almost likes the JB and doesnt want modern.

My Jackson Pro Plus came with them and it was a huge adjustment for my ears. At first I didnt like them but after a while i found theyre very organic, open and with all the tone and do metal just fine.

I still may swap them but I bet OP would like them and they've grown on me somewhat.

That pickup wants to see a 125K total load and you have a 500K pot. At least get a 250K and see if it helps.

If you want to clean up the flub while retaining tension, try a set of Fender 150R pure nickel strings. Heaviest they go is .011-.049, but I'm telling you, it's worth a shot to give you the low end clarity you want. They last forever and you can run your treble, bass, mid and presence controls more open. Worked for Eddie, works for me. This way you get the full bottom and snap, but with a lighter gauge, which clears up mud. Try it, you might be pleasantly surprised!
