Best way to find serious musicians for band?

Running barefoot through a big ass pit of fiery burning coals sounds like more fun to me than going through everything that goes with being in a band, especially a cover band playing 80s jams but I wish you luck dude
Didn't sway we were playing 80s jams. I want to be fully original eventually, but you got to start jamming on something first

Best bet, is go to some local gigs, they're usually some musicians in the crowd and or disgruntled band members looking for a way out.
I got yanked out of a band that was doing RATM, , Korn, FFDP and other stuff like that. Occasionally, they would do a simple Ozzy, Pantera or Metallica song.
They got jealous, when I decided to do a 5 minute Shred Fest on our break and they were stunned at the crowds reaction to it.

The band didn't like it, but three guys in the crowd loved the improvised Malmsteen, Satriani, Bratta type solo spot and asked me to try out for their band.

They asked me to join after the first practice .
I finally got into a band that is at my level and enjoy the covers / originals that's being played.

Sometimes it works that way !!

The easiest way is to join an existing band, play your ass off and impress people, and network. If you’re not going that route, network at local shows of bands playing styles in the same wheelhouse of what you’re interested in. Introduce yourself and chat a bit, before parting ways casually ask if they know anyone into the music your are that are looking for a project. If you do the FB thing, usually there are musician groups or even groups for specific genres for the larger cities / regions nearby you, join them and post what you’re looking for. Toss in a sample of your playing and you’ll probably get a decent amount of replies too. I’d drop the “serious” bit because people will just ignore that and reply regardless.

Worked for me, it got me out of that Nu Metal - Lalapaloser band.

Let the music do the talking !!!!

I don’t fuck around with anyone that can’t send me a recording of them doin their thing. It’s 2023 ffs. Had ppl come up to me at shows and ask if we’re lookin for another guitarist, front man, etc., talkin themselves up but can’t be bothered to at least make a simple phone recording. Flappin gums & blowin smoke.

I’d say you’re going about it the best way you possibly can right night. Agree with others that getting out into whatever scene you can and making acquaintances that way is the best way. Don’t be afraid to put the kabosh on anyone who isn’t working in whatever way as soon as it starts souring. In other words, if someone isn’t working out, end it quickly and don’t drag it out. I learned that the hard way. Best of luck to you. This is a monumental task you’re undertaking.

This is how I worded my current ad:

Serious replies ONLY!"

With chops like that , you are looking for a unicorn. You want guys with chops in their own right but also the right attitude, maturity, and look. It's gonna be tough. I've looked at getting into bands jn the past and found the same thing. Lots of flakes and leads that go nowhere. It can be extremely discouraging. Just keep plugging away. Maybe you could look at local music stores where teachers leave their business cards..you might find a bass and drum teacher offering services who is serious and who you know will have a certain level of musicianship? Worth a shot.

I use Ableton Live, I have a drum plugin I've used for well over a decade, microtonic; you can program sounds, parts, and order the sequence of parts and their repeats for a full song. https://soniccharge.com/microtonic

It's for electronic, techno, pystrance, etc. but there's a lot more to it IME. They have a website that uses AI to generate random patterns; you can download them and use them; vote them up or down which determines the next pattern you get to preview.

I'll create a drum track with microtonic, then either program or play bass lines, these days usually with my keys; layer rhythm tracks, etc.
I've also found a few free backing track sites, where you can choose the instruments, the genre, etc. hit or miss as it's uploaded by randoms.

I gave up trying to form a band here because it's tough to find people into the same music, ideas, kind of band, what kind of schedule are they willing to support, etc., who aren't crazy or undependable, etc. It's time consuming with too many time wasters. Even going to jams and shows.

Most recently, last year or the year before, I was looking for a jazz/rock fusion drummer to eventually form a trio: drums, guitar and me on Hammond with bass pedals; let's just say, many drummers that responded don't know what "jazz/rock fusion" means, some didn't know what a "Hammond organ with pedals" was. There's a convention center here, and several hotels downtown looking for this kind of music, as well as a jazz club, many business functions hosted in the area.

and so it goes...

Last time I stated a band me and a drummer and a bass player had some great songs . It was like deftones Soundgarden with some tech thrash mixed on 8 strings . A singer sent a demo and it he sang great . Alice chains covers STP covers . Really good stuff . We say that’s what we want and we start . As time goes on he starts to sing like canibal corpse on each track . We had a tripped out deftones meets Pink Floyd track and he did death metal on the track when at first he sang . We said why did you stop singing and do all death metal vocals . He said it’s how he all always sang the whole time from the beginning . I just walked out. No way that convo goes anywhere lol. He sang great at first so it bummed me out

Thank you!

And 100% spot on. It sucks!

I was recently working with a bass player to build a band like I'm saying. Similar age. Exact same musical tastes and direction we wanted to go. We were auditioning drummers/singers at the time. Had lots of plans for 2023. But then on a whim he decided to join this crappy band that was already formed and gigging. It was a lower bar of entry. Easier type of music (alternative/grunge etc...). His excuse was that my goals were unrealistic. However, I don't really think they were. I was willing to recruit whoever wasn't a complete train wreck just to get out playing, then make the lineup changes as we go. If you look at all the big bands that ever existed, that's what they did. Typically go through several lineup changes until they find the perfect guys. It's all about stepping stones, and gradual steps towards the final product. But he just couldn't see the long term picture. Very high time preference. Bummer!

If you arent a boomer, i suggest you go ahead and channel the boomer and use the newspaper, because starting an evh cover band..that is your crowd and bandmates. Maybe put a note in a bottle and throw it out to sea. Try to force some reading glasses in there too. Also, go to the music stores and look for old guys with hawaiian shirts. They are the coolest cats from that time.

I’m guessing while he’s doing that you’re looking for other players at Chuck E Cheese?

My first piece of advice would be, learn to sing. One less thing you need up front.
I'll tell you what--That's the Gods Honest Truth . You don't have to be great or a front man but that is something you can offer a band .
