Better out-front delay than the Lovepedal Echophonic Jr?

I know this question gets beaten to death, so sorry. But I'm trying to settle on a delay pedal to run in front of a high gain amp. I despise the loop on my Recto and running wet/dry is just PITA.

I used a flashback for a while and it was not great for this. Heard the Pete Thorn demo of the Echophonic Jr and read positive reviews, so I bought one. Maybe it's a bit better, but if it's the best I can hope for I'll just give up on using delay.

I'm sure someone will say Strymon, maybe I'll give it a try, but in a post Pete Torn said he didn't think it was any better (for this purpose) than the Echophonic Jr. I'm thinking of just getting a DD2 or 3 for the JCM (which does just fine with delay out front but behind the SD-1) and giving up on delay with the Recto.

Thanks guys.

I use the El Cap out front...sounds like a tape echo into the front end of an amp should. That said, if you use a shit-ton of gain, nothing will likely sound very good running into the front end.

^^^ this ... I run the ElCap in front and sounds+works fantastic.

Why do companies make bad loops in nice amps, i don't get it?

why dont you like the loop on your amp?

cant imagine using time based effects in front of high gain = mush

i admit im ignorant about loops (series, line level, etc) but i have never used an amp without one and used delay for gigs

fill me in

I wish I knew why companies install terrible loops. Diezel gets them right. The Recto loop is terrible all round. The most unforgivable thing about it: even with nothing in it, the loop makes an otherwise wonderful-sounding amp into a harsh fizzy buzz-box if it's not hard bypassed.

I'll probably just give up on the idea and just run wet/dry if I must have delay. The problem I seem to have is that the repeats either are cleaner (less overdriven) than the original signal (which makes them hard to hear and if you can hear them, just sound weird) or they are a distorted mess. I probably just use too much gain.

iggs, didn't know you were on here

Was going to PM you over at GC, just got my 2 pedals

From the amount of pedals this man has owned, I'd trust his opinion

Noise when effects loop is engaged - wow.

effects loop have tube specific for it? Bad tube in the loop?

how about using a noise gate in the loop and leaving it on all the time?

No, the effects loop does not add noise. It changes the tone and character of the amp if it's in the signal path.

LOL ... OH HAI!!! ...

Yeah, I check in here every once in a while ...

+1 on the El Cap. If you need heeps of gain turn your amp gain down and run a boost in front of the El cap.

A lot of people love the old Ibanez Soundtank Echomachine for in front of amps.
