Better to mic top speaker rather then lower?

On my 4X12 is it better to mic the top speaker or lower one near floor. Or....... it don't matter?

In a live situation, it is usually better to mic the top speaker due to bass traps, for lack of a better term, near the floor. Stages tend to be hollow underneath and bass frequencies linger there. They'll bleed into the mic.
As far as recording, I like the bottom speaker because you get better thump closer to the floor, and you can reduce the bass in your tone to get a cleaner overdriven result. Assuming your talking about overdriven tones.

But, then again....what do I know!!???

I always mic a top speaker. I don't know that it sounds any better/worse, it was just my first inclination and since I was getting what I wanted, I saw no reason to change...

lol! I find myself doing tests mroe then recording. I got a new mic 906 and mix it with a 57. 57 is just of center off cone and 906 on outer edge. So here I am testing with 2 57's, then 1 57 and 1 906. And then one 57.

And regarding phasing. I don't recognize this. Is this something is immediately noticeable? Because I don't notice anything odd?

I've noticed that with Phase issues, something out-of-phase isn't a bad thing. When we tracked our demo recently, the guitars in the final product were out of phase....in phase, they sounded like crap.

I always mic the bottom right speaker. NO particular reason really, I just always go with that one. You know us guitarists are kinda of supersticious, so I always mic the same one.

Using two mics doesn't automatically mean they're out of phase, at least in the sense that you will always hear what is out of phase royally screwing up the sound. If they're in phase, you won't notice it, and that just means you did it right. If you're close micing, you're probably not going to encounter many problems.

And on the other side of the token, if they're out of phase, just flipping the phase on one isn't necessarily the proper solution, so if you do have a problem, mess with the mic positioning first.

Sounds like the mix was done based on the guitars being out of phase, then, if that really was the case. That's kind of like saying that not using a mic preamp and just running a mic directly into a line level connection isn't a bad thing just because it produces sound. There are problems with going about things that way, and you're not going to hear that on a CD you go out and buy in a store. If nothing else, there's no point in making things harder on yourself than they have to be.

I'm guessing the mics were out of phase to begin with and the recorded tracks were flipped to counter the problem.
