Last time I checked not everyone's idea of a guitar hero is EVH or Yngwie. Corgan can definitely play and has made some great music. Weak thread, IMO.

IMO, Gish and Siamese Dream are KILLER albums. Nothing amazing guitar wise, but killer melodies and very well-written in general. His voice got very whiny and annoying on anything else after this period IMO.

I admit that I don't listen to that crap band for several reasons (whiney voice, mushy guitar tones, etc...), but aren't his guitar skills right up there with Kurt Cobain? In other words, isn't he just a half-assed rhythm player without any mad SKILLZ?

Actually, he can rip it up. There are a bunch of old vids of him doing so. I also saw him with Zwan and he can play.

The vids I saw where he was doing VH type stuff( I think he was even playing a VH frankenstrat) blew IMHO... Ive never been a fan of him or that band.,,

Well, he sure has left his footprint in music. Sometimes that's hard for amateurs like us to swallow. I also think it's pathetic to rip someone apart based on a sound byte and even more low to make fun of someones hair, or lack of. All i know is, I've never played stadium or arena tours or sold millions of albums. I'm pretty sure no one here has either.
Again, it can be hard for some to swallow. Especially if you happen to be an arm chair cynic.

Yep, sounds like there is more to the story because the kind of waiter that would approach a customer from the night before to call him out for not tipping, sorry, I mean "rip him a new asshole" is not someone who's version of events I'm going to take at face value. Even if we do take this guy's story at face value that is a psychotic thing to do even if he had given great service and gotten no tip. If I was with my mom and some douchebag gave shit service and then has the gall to "rip me a new asshole" for not tipping his ass IN FRONT OF MY MOM on the beach the where I'm paying $$$ to stay the next day you can bet I would be pissed too.

From my point of view, in America, you tip, even if it's not a big tip. Now Im not saying the guy should have yelled at him on the beach, Im just saying, Corgan didnt Tip and then got him fired too. Out here the restaurant and hotel industry is basically the only means of employment some people have out here. Why do you think BC's original guitarist and bassist passed up mega bucks to do the reunion? Cuz the dude is a dick. guitar hero = guitar icon, i.e., its more about the person/personality. slash is a great example. he's larger than life with decent chops that impress the non-guitar playing masses. 99.9% of the general public doesn't give a crap about a guitarist's idea of a guitar hero, which is usually some guy without any rock attitude or style, but who can shred/play his arss off. most people get sick of these people after hearing them for about 2 minutes; super speed wanking without any memorable melodies. the opposite side is the guy all decked out in the latest rock star clothes from a rock star store, with retarded wallet chains/neck chains/ insert any parody accessory here who has zero talent and just screams and whatnot when he's on the mic. lots of those guys playing in bands these days.

corgan definitely has a really unique style and though he may "suck" on the guitar, the era of music from which he sprouted, anti-music music, had/has a huge following from people who were sick of watching kip winger's ballet moves no matter what kind of 80s cliche licks were getting thrown down, not without talent, from the band's guitarist. his voice, playing style, tone, look, and songwriting are instantly recognizable and though many "guitarists" think he sucks, most "guitarists" are out of touch with what most people want to see, hear. corgan has been incredibly successful doing what he does while the rest of us can't quite figure out why the crowd doesn't do backflips when we fly off the top ropes with a wicked aeolian flying elbow to the head.

Sure, I understand what you're saying and I agree - having worked in the service industry I always tip. However, you do not *have* to tip and a lot of hotel restaurants tack on gratuity anyways and then servers still hope to get tipped on top of that. That said, the kind of guy who would rip corgan a new asshole in front of his mom (which he obviously KNEW it was his mom to have retold the story) is a dick at best. He's also exactly the kind of guy to have given Corgan shit service out of jealousy/spite due to Corgan's success, IMO. Impossible to say without having been there, but the waiter sounds like a loser and deserved to be fired for losing it like that the next day IMO. I know what Hawaii is like as far as the tourism industry reigning king and if this dude was concerned about his job he'd have known that that was probably the stupidest thing he could do. Pretty much any manager would fire a server if he got a call about them harassing guests, celebrity or not.

I like the smashing pumpkins, but Corgan is not a guitar hero. James Iha was a lot better guitarrist and Corgan, that's why the band started sucking when Iha left.

Like I said I wasnt there but I just thought that this story was worth telling. It could have just as easily been the other way around where maybe the guy forgot to bring Billy a lemon wedge and got no tip because of it and then he was just really pissed because he knows Billy is rich and should have at least left something for a tip. But no, he shouldnt have lashed out on him at the beach of course that's way uncalled for.

I saw him live a couple of years ago (my wife is a huge fan). Not bad at all - funny audience though (I felt pretty old then) - pretty cool songwriting. The voice and attitude are not my cup of tea, but still . . .
No idea if he's an asshole, at least he has taste when it comes to guitar amps
