Early to mid 70s was Zep, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, Bad Company, Queen, REO, Journey, AC/DC, Kiss, Nugent, Alice Cooper, Thin Lizzy, Rush...if you listen to the guitar music of the year V4 was released and compare it to the V4 sound, you'll hear how different Sabbath was; and do the same for SBS, Sabotage, etc. and compare what was going on at the same time with other bands, you can't miss it: after V4 Sabbath was trying to sound like everyone else.

With V4, nobody sounded like Sabbath; the closest was Deep Purple In Rock, which predated V4 by two years. If you compare SBS and Sabotage to other guitar bands, you'd hear it too: Sabbath guitars sounded like every other "hard rock" guitar band.

After V4, Sabbath was trying to jump on the mainstream rock bandwagon, I was there in the 70s, and purchased Sabotage, Technical Ecstasy, and Never Say Die when they were first released...and saw the NSD tour in '78 with VH opening.

You saying Symptom of the Universe sounding like anything is crazy af . Nothing sounds like that tone to this day . I’m befuddled af
 
Ozzy sounded like an old man on BS and oddly sounded younger as the albums came. I choose Paranoid, but my fave is SBS.
 
Paranoid. Much tighter album, and everyone sounds better on it.

The first six are all 10/10s in my book.
 
I’d say Paranoid overall, but I love NIB and The Wizard from the first album. My current favourite of the early albums is (just) SBS, followed very closely by Vol 4 which in turn is just ahead of MoR. But it’s very, very close and can change. The rawness of MOR is awesome and the riffs on Sweet Leaf and Into the Void are among my favourites.
 
I’m kinda surprised so many are choosing Vol 4 as their favorite, nothing against the album and I love it, but it’s probably number 4 for me.

Vol. 4 is my favorite, but i didnt bring it up because the op asked about the first 2 albums. Master of reality is my 2nd favorite but those first 6 albums are amazing imo, it dont get much better.
