Not sure if you guys seen this but this was a decent YT clip of a Langner preamp that's known for having all kinds of balls, enjoy

I bought yours. It had also the hyper mod if I recall correctly. It sounded very impressive at first, but once I started comparing it to my other amps, it came off super compressed (even next to one of my Engls I had at the time) and didn’t have the level of nuance or detail as my actual amp heads. I’ve tried a few other pretty sought after preamps (played a Bogner Fish and own still an Aguilar 1911) and while they can be cool, none of them to me sound as a good as just a great head. I’ve talked to a few of my techs who also told me they’ll never sound the same or as good as a full amp. The tone and feel of the preamps I’ve tried reminded me of modeling amps in many ways. They were very forgiving in that same kinda way. YMMVgtrwun":2tfps6va said:Sounds exactly like the DCP-1 I had. Great preamp.
I agree with this in a general sense; when I bought a Strategy 400 I'd slave my 60w 2C+ into it, and out to 4 cabs. Monstrous power and tone, but at a lower volume compared to the 2C+ through one cab at the same volume the amp+cab was better..similar tone but the 'distance' in the signal chain caused a slight difference to my ears. Small maybe but it was there. I'd bet the Langner modded Marshall and a cab is a touch better than the preamp + power amp rig. At least to my ears.braintheory":yjk4i6kq said:I bought yours. I did though think that video did a very good job showing the tones the Langner DCP-1 has. Would be interesting if he compared them to some amps and maybe it would show what I’m talking about
Well slaving your c+ into the 400 would be a pretty different sound because that’d be the whole amp into the poweramp, while I only ran the Langner preamp through poweramps. The former like you did I like a lot. With stand alone preamps into poweramps I find the difference to be big, especially in feel compared to an amp. I’d think a Langner modded Marshall would likely be different from the preamps in a similar way that the Cameron amps sound very different than his modded Marshall’s, but my only Langner experience was that preamp. It had a very pleasing voicing, so it doesn’t surprise that it translates well to clips. I never play at lower volumes when doing side by side comparisons of gear or trying to figure out an amp’s tone or also speakers/pedals/pickups/guitars, etcRacerxrated":37xlgp11 said:I agree with this in a general sense; when I bought a Strategy 400 I'd slave my 60w 2C+ into it, and out to 4 cabs. But that preamp sounds damn killer, for sure.

I should have mentioned that I used the preamp out to the Strategy; there's 2 ways to do that with the C+ as you can use the FX send or the output jack that's located underneath on the chassis next to the Reverb in/out jacks. Didn't sound even close to the amp by itself. Then I slaved the whole amp which did sound much better but still paled to the stand alone amp through a cab.braintheory":2e9ucnfc said:Well slaving your c+ into the 400 would be a pretty different sound because that’d be the whole amp into the poweramp, while I only ran the Langner preamp through poweramps. I though like the Aguilar 1911 preamp amp I have more than I remember liking the Langner, but still not sure if I’ll keep it or not ultimately. Probably one of the rarer things I’ve had. It has crazy amount of gain and bottom end on tap if desired, but still has that preamp sound and feel that I don’t care for (compressed, lacking detail/nuance, forgiving in the same way as modelers)
