How much of the Vox AC30 chimey tone is in the Celestion Blue speakers? I'm thinking of pulling the chassis out of my '77 JMP 50watt and putting it in a custom 212 combo cab. If I do, I'll also yank the GE 6550s and install a set of THD Yellowjackets.

My goal is to try and get a mixture of my classic Marshall tone with a touch of Vox thrown in for good measure. Would a pair of blue speakers (probably Weber, but I'm open to suggestions) be necessary for this, or would a set of GB clones (Weber, Scumback, etc) do the trick?

Thanks for your help.

Put down your credit card and power tools.

You'd be MUCH better off modding the preamp's tone stack.

A Marshall preamp through yellow jackets and celestion blues is still going to sound like a marshall.

you need to

I understand that, but I used to have a set of Yellowjackets in a Marshall 4100, and they definitely changed the character. I'm not looking for an AC30, or I'd just buy one. I'm looking for a blend of the two tones. I love the Marshall tone and I'm okay with it, but I'd like to color it somewhat, if that makes sense.

well, either way, the weber ceramic blues sound AWESOME.

Ceramic? I was figuring AlNiCo would be a necessity. I'd be STOKED to spend less and get the ceramics! Thanks for the info.

I would say the speakers are a big part of the Vox sounds, but even with a tube change you won't get quite the same sort of shimmer as you would from the Vox circuit.

A good friend of mine used to say "if you want a Marshall sound, get a Marshall", and the same holds true for Vox or Fender or whatever.

hey guitar slinger
I got an ac30 top boost circuit built into another amp
do I really need the blue type speakers to get the vibe?
Alnico Blues are the classic AC30 speakers, when you think AC tone you're thinking blues. However you can get close with Fanes or Greenbacks.

I think it would work for what you are wanting. I've tried Blues with Marshall voiced amps and it does give them a cool tone, more vintage voicing with a really nice top end...love the Blues top end, it's really sweet.
2 Blues would blow up with a 50 watt Marshall though, I'd go for 2 Golds.

I got a 100 watt w/ 1/2 power switch
so 50 watts ....no way I can do the alnico blues in as 2x12

the alnico gold speaker, when being pushed, does it really sound like a high powered blues?

1. With the Yellowjackets, output will be 18 watts.
2. Weber Blue Dogs are available in 15, 30, 50, 75, or 100 watt ratings. I planned to order 2 30 watt models.
