Bogner 20th Anniv XTC owners: EL34 or 6l6 version?

I've been considering one as well. Definitely stopping at the Bogner booth in a couple of weeks at NAMM!

I've got the EL34 version and this choice was based on the fact that I've simply preferred the tone of EL34 over amps loaded with 6L6s. I'm sure either would have been aces - but I custom ordered my 20thA as the EL34 version, ClassA/AB, all the bells and whistles... Love it - desert island amp - and yes - it can do very very clean sparkly tones. Read the manual - Reinhold explains how to use the deductive EQ to get it where you want it to go.

2 cents. IMHO.

But a masterpiece of an amp

I've had both, really loved the 6L6 version though both are great.

To me it really comes down to a single question, would you want a rounder more american clean tone or a more birtish upper mid gain tone?

I only have the EL34 but also have an Ecstasy classic. The 20th EL34 gets closer to a fender style clean than the classic but not as good as the 6l6 vids and clips I've come across. The gain channel has loads more gain available than the classic and certainly sounds more marshally or british with better upper mids than the 6l6 vids and clips. While the EL34 doesn't sound exactly like a fender it still has a very great clean tone and the gain channels or more to my taste than what I've heard from the 6l6 vids and clips so its EL34 for me. That being said Reza's demo of the 6l6 sounds pretty damned great... I think most anyone would be quite pleased with either because they are monster amps but if you answer the opening question it should tell you which one may be better for you.

Vs. and Ecstasy classic, the 20th has more available gain and the additional excursion and presence controls really let the user dial in tones for each channel in a better way I think...

Cant really go wrong with either one. They both are "desert island" amps for sure.I love my fully loaded 6l6 20th.I missed an opportunity to pick up a modded 101b w/ the red channel modded to ubershall specs by bogner himself.Shouldve jumped on that one.

I had both 6L6 and EL34 20th's plus a 101b regular older one and kept the EL34 20th and sold off the others if that tells you anything. Just liked the midrange better on the EL34.

I had the 6l6 version. It was the original design. I miss that amp. Had to sell it due to life changes. I hope to have it again. It was that good. My desert island amp.

I've had the 6l6 20th and the 101b several times.
Imho skip the 20th Anniversary and just get the 101b.
Most people (not all) agree the blue channel is the best tones in the amp and the 101b blue channel is killer (red is no slouch either) and the 6L6 20th Anni blue channel I had was nowhere near as good sounding or feeling as the 101b. The mojo was lost but the rest of the amp was very good...just no magic blue channel, the money channel for sure!

That and the fact that the 101b is much easier to get rid of when it's time to sell. My 20th sat for months and months here and at TGP and finally had to drop the price to $2450 to make a sale and it sat for days at that price as well.
