I think the OP was dead on right about clips being pretty useless to really judge whether an amp is for you or not.
My hit ratio of determining whether I'll like an amp based only upon clips is very high so this does not fall true for all. I think so far the only amp that didn't fit me well was the Fryette UL. Every other amp I've bough only after hearing clips I've really enjoyed.
Perhaps it's all about listening approach and expectations.
Again, the position that clips are effectively useless is throwing the baby out with the bath water.
Maybe I should say useless without the context of everything involved.
1. Size of the room and if its treated.
2. Recording Chain/Manipulation
3. Equipment being demoed
4. Players style.
5. Volume/youtube compression
6. Listening Device by user.
Number 4 on the list I was addressing in this topic. I feel like Mark and the rest of great players can make any amp combo sound great. Just like a good race car driver will yield the best results in any car they drive. I dig it,Iv'e done it and I do find it helpful.
