I just scored a Dual Rectifier half stack for a steal, because the head is blowing fuses. Changed all the tubes, blew another one. I read that it’s most likely a diode switch. Took it out of the shell and found this, right by the diode switch. I also noticed that this guy was running 6L6’s in the EL34 setting. The board has residue, but doesn’t appear burnt, nor the wires. I’ve got a local amp tech (AmpMan) who’s really good that I can go to. Cheap and easy fix?

Does it look like the char started from the blue varistor?

It actually does. It’s got the most burn residue underneath it.

Its the problem... look at the right side. Its blown out.

Do you think that may be the extent of the damage? Could running 6L6’s in EL34 bias do that?

Not sure... but running tubes that require different bias voltages isnt good. Could stress lots of parts. The circuit board needs to be cleaned to determine if any traces were burnt, etc.

Gotcha. It’s going to a tech. Thanks man.

Sometimes dipshits use fast blow fuses instead of slow blow also. I was helping a friend who had the same problem. He bought/used the wrong fuses when he had tubes go out, and I told him, "wrong fuses, dummy". They'd blow immediately. I even did it myself, until I learned my lesson.

Sometimes it could be the cause or the victim.

as opposed to an amp I bought that had a nail in the fuse holder instead of a fuse.

I’d remove the power an rectifier tubes and see if it still blows. Also try on both bold and spongy. Can you see the diodes on the board and have a multimeter?

Very true, it’s likely the victim...
