I've been experimenting with boosting my 5150 with an SD-1 and it sounds ok so I'm open to other suggestions for pedals that may work better with it. I'm looking for something that will provide some sustain and sparkle for solos with the gain set low and will "push it over the cliff" with higher gain levels for metal excursions. Like I said the SD-1 can do this to a degree but if there's something that does it a little better...

i Have a pedal (cheap) its the More pedal.. some guys here have em maybe they can chime in.. its like 75 shipped here in the states.

I like the Analogman TS-9 with classis 808 mod and Silver option. Sounds KILLER boosting the 5150 crunch channel for tight metal rhythm...

*Tube Screamer TS808
or
*Maxon 808

*Modded for True Bypass if they aren't already....

Unless you are running your pedals in a buffered loop- then you can use some that sound great but tone-suck on their own:

Bad Monkey
Behringer OD800 - yeah I know...It's built like shit but it's a great boost...Although I've become rather fond of my Monkey lately... :D

The Bad Monkey has excellent tone and controls but is NOT true bypass and, left unattended, will suck the shimmer right out of your tone...Sucks...But that's why it's 40 bucks and still built quite well, they skimped on the bypass....And the Monkey is hard to mod to true I'm told....I've never tried but it's pretty packed inside there already....I may just give it a go sometime...If I do, I'll try to remember to come back here and post....

Why boost an amp that already has so much gain and sustain????????

Almost all high gain amps like to be boosted...At least with a clean boost....I like a very little bit of dirt myself for most amps...Just my thoughts...There are exceptions of course...My Blue Voodoo does not like to be boosted and sounds like it is already anyway...

The 5150s I've heard sound better with a boost....Tighter and meaner...

I have a Barber Direct Drive and a Keeley SD-1. I just cannot imagine givien my 5150 anymore. But my Marshall... boost pedals make it so much better.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like a tube screamer may be in order next. I wonder how an EP Boost or similar would work?

Mod the SD-1, stock it's alright, but this mod gives it some more juice. It gives the amp an extra edge and give it some balls, I almost cannot play my 5150 without it.

Step 5, don't jump it, replace it with a regular LED

tubescreamer or maxon level dimed gain 0'd equal killswitch engaged the end of heartache era that almum was mostly boosted 5150s

and it is in my opinion one of the best newer metal "recordings" lately but Im an old fart lol..Beutiful mixing by the guitarist hes a genius..

Damn that seems simple enough.

I thought my old MXR 6 band EQ sounded pretty good in front of my Voodoo modded 6505+, but I was mostly cutting the lows and highs and boosting the mids slightly...just a really mild frown curve setting.

MXR GT-OD or the equivalent MXR Classic Overdrive from GC for $40. Very 808 like, but warmer and thicker.
I like using a Fulltone OCD in HP mode with my 6505 as well.

Cusack screamer is my favorite so far. The zakk overdrive is great for boosting.

been using a bad monkey...
i really want a maxon od808...that plus a 5150 is just boosted perfection to my ears.

call me crazy bit I never felt the need to boost mine,,it is biased properly but just never thought it really needed it?/idk
