Episode 8: Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion

Before I embarked on my Boss pedal quest, I don't think I had even heard of the DS-2. At one point I had a Turbo Overdrive, but I sold it long ago. This is basically the Distortion version of that pedal.

I've got to be honest, this one surprised me! Now, it doesn't really work well in front of a totally clean amp (like most Boss dirt pedals), but it rules in front of a slightly dirty amp. In fact, I only show the 12:00 position in front of the low input on the Marshall 800, before I move on to the high input. You have to crank the Level up to max for it to achieve unity gain. It just works with a dirty amp so much better.

I think the reason why Boss dirt pedals get such a bad rap, is because people don't use them right. You can't put them in front a solid state practice amp and expect good tone. Throw it on in front of your dirty Marshall 100 watt, and then you will see what I mean!

Anyway, there are two modes. I prefer Mode I, as it sounds a bit more neutral. Mode II almost sounds more saturated, but I think it's just a different EQ curve. I feel like mode I has more low-lows while mode II has more low-mids.

Good demo! I know both Kurt Cobain used it later on, and John Frusciante has been using it the past decade or so.

Prince also uses it quite a bit

I have one, mode ll for great for leads :)

It's weird to think that Prince is a big Boss pedal guy. But apparently he is (at least live).
