This amp also has 6550’s which I’m liking. Tight bottom. They’re Sovtek, and who knows how old. They are biasing within 4ma but I’d like to put something fresh in there. I have a spare set of Ruby 6550aSTR. I tried them and it tightens the bottom a lot. Super tight. But they’re mismatched pretty far out. I was looking at the Tung sol 6550 reissue. Anyone have opinions on the best 6550 for these modded Marshalls?

Here’s a quick and dirty iPhone clip at very low volume

Bottom line, it sounds killer. And, you have some killer amps. Some great sounding modded Marshalls have had ugly looking work when opened up..Camerons and real Jose A amps come to mind. Not saying it’s from either but if it sounds great, why not keep it?

Grab some GE 6550s. They are spendy like the Mesa 415s are but really take a 6550 amp to another level. Worth it IMO.

Thanks, I appreciate it. That’s exactly where I’m at with it. Sure, the mods look strange, but honestly it functions just as good as any of my high end production amps. The MV works extremely well, it sounds fantastic at whisper volumes, the loop is great and there are no weird noises, crackles, pops etc.... After I posted this thread and played it, I knew I’d regret taking it back.

I’ve been eyeing some GE 6550’s. Seems they’re the holy grail.

Thanks. My buddy who used to have a Cameron modded Marshall said the same thing, very close to what his sounded like.

I saw an almost stock Marshall JMP with a small inductor and cap off of one of the jacks. Amp sounded great.

Yeah if you like how it sounds, keep it. :)

You say the GC had another one? You play both to compare or just this one?

Sounds great!! Really nice growl in there.
Ad long as your happy, that's all that matters.

I agree with the above. If it sounds good then keep it. Modded or not, I have owned some modded marshalls recently that the base of the marshall tone was trash, and no amount of modding outside of a complete gut would fix it. As with any original marshalls, if it sounds good, hang on to it. You can always take it to have it fixed later on when the time comes. Just pray you don't have a circuit problem since there isn't any provided schematic or documentation for what has been done.

I would keep it if it sounds good as you say.

If there is a problem in the future, anyone who knows the Marshall circuit could easily spot the changes made,
worst case scenario, if you are knowledgeable with tube amps you just need a multimeter, use continuity setting to find out which points are connected, and measure resistance and capacitance and write everything down.

Sounds great. I'd try to call the GC and ask which guy took in the amp as a trade in and talk to them directly. They might remember or know a bit more about mods done to it since they worked with the person trading it in.

Only played the 75. My buddy had played both before that and he says they’re nearly identical. He slightly preferred the 75 for whatever reason.

I liked the cosmetics of this one a little better and it sounded so good I didn’t even bother with the 74. Probably should have though.

Good idea actually.

I'd say, if it sounds good, keep it! My only reservations would be if I had to move it. You may run into some snobs that want to go through it with a fine-tooth comb, and nit-pick components, etc, and devalue it in some way. If it were me, I'd want a competent tech to go over it, and maybe even spend a little to upgrade any questionable components, and get a detailed bill of health. If it's the be-all, end-all tone in your head, keep it and play the shit out of it!

Well it certainly sounds pissed! I agree with the above statement about seeing if GC can tell you who turned it in so you can find out about the mod.

I’d be pissed if they gave out my personal info.

GC can contact the previous owner and inquire about it. No need to give out personal info.

GC doesn’t know a goddamn thing about a goddamn thing, and on top of that, they give zero fucks.

It depends on the employee...I've met/talked with some that sound like they might do it...aaand then you have the "I don't give a shit" dudes as well.
Doesn't hurt to give it a shot...

Alot of people criticizing the work would be surprised at some of the amps I've come across from some of the more popular builders
