I can send it to you if you want to watch it. Its pretty cool.

That DVD is cool. Most of it is on YOutube. I got my copy at Tower records about 6 years ago or so, when it was still around. I think you can get it online.

as far as that tone, it was ahead of it's time imo.
i really believe he had the clearest richest metal tone of that era--it was like a hip tone cat going, oh yeah i can put a mean crunch tone together, and he was a great player. but he had the california party image like hagar with the curly surfer hair, and looked odd wearing metal studs, but wasn't cool enough to be eddie or touch his scene,

and he didn't play the serious metal hero part like lynch and randy and yngwie-

i always thought he was using some of the first mark IIIs

he played with ozzy in hawaii on the diary tour, so i missed randy by inches...
and when the gtr tech played a few chords before the show, it was huge and grinding enough that the audience roared.

but that gillis whammy bar abuse...sorta ruined the randy vibe and was way too gimmicky and a crutch

yep,i've got that dvd also.funny,i was just watching it on saturday nite :D i found it avail on ebay a few years ago from a seller in South America.i bought it to have a backup for my vhs tape which had the ORIGINALLY-aired show on MTV back in 1983 and i got a copy of it on vhs from my cousin, who had cable tv,which had just come out and it was another couple of years until my town got it.anyways, the Speak Of The Devil concert is one of the coolest concerts ever, especially since in the dvd,Ozzy sings all Ozzy songs(except for the last 3 encore's) whereas the album was all Black Sabbath songs....i've watched this concert about a 1000 times since i got it back in '83 and it NEVER gets old! the Mesa Mark tone on that concert, imo,is the "evilest" tone of all the Ozzy guitarist tones ever....GREAT STUFF!!!!!!!!!!

Just listening to the Boneyard on the way to work and still cant believe the grind and sustain he got on that recording...Mesa???? boosted to hell???lol I forget exactly what year...right after Randy..that was something for that time.
It was like Danny said. 2 Mesa Boogie MKIIb's and a chorus pedal, no boost. I e-mailed Brad years ago about that and that's pretty much what he said he used.
Even the early Boogs had plenty of gain on tap and the really weird thing with the early boogies is if you put something in the loop like a chorus pedal, the gain got hopped up even more. Im not saying that's how Brad hooked it up but ive always noticed that about the early boogies.

Yup! That's what he said he was using. He is one of the few from back in the day that I believe and he has been very consistent with his info over the years lol!

you and zachman are my early boogie tone authorities :D

my biggest boogie regret was not hanging on to a mIIB series 300 in wicker that i scored for $400 build and signed by randy smith

when i went to pick it up, the guy was complaining it wasn't crunching enough, so i test drove before purchasing, played a few chords.... bleah
changed the settings a bit, and plugged his 8 ohm cab into the 4 ohm jack, and hit a chord....
he was in shock asking me how what what pickups that never did that for me and i was out the door before he could stop stammering :D

do you still have the coli III?

Are those vocals recut?

They must be. They sound ridiculous for a live show.
I was wondering that also. Watching him sing and some did not match with his mouth. I didn't want to get crucified for pointing it out

YEAH MESA!!!

That's the thing with the Marks.... You can be one setting away from making it sound like doo doo hahahhaa :D
That's funny because the same thing Happened to me and Harry! Harry was looking for a MKIV after he had heard mine. We finally located one and went to this guys house and when we got there the owner proceeded to tell us how he was letting the MKIV go for a soldano because the MKIV didn't have enough gain hahhaa I immediately went  :scared:  As soon as I saw this guys settings on the IV it started making sense to me why he would say that hahahha. I brought a boss se-50 with me, put it in the loop for some grease and set it to my settings and I started to play and Harry and the seller of the amp were looking over at me and Harry yelled at me to come over. I stopped playing and Harry wispered in my ear... YOU PLAY ONE MORE FUCKING note and Im going to kill you hahha! The guy heard the sound I was getting and almost backed out of the deal. Harry paid the dude and we high tailed out of there and the whole experiance made for a great conversation the whole ride home :D :D

YUP, I still have the Cali and it's AMAZING sounding! I played it for Mike Fortin recently and he said that out of all the Boogies he has heard the Coli sounded the most like a Hot rodded Marshall

This album was an eye opener for me when it came out when I was a kid. For me it had some of the best versions of some Sabbath tunes, and I love Gillis' tone and playing. The solos sound like Brad was just winging it, just created on the spot. He's a great improv rock player.
Brad was one of those guys that really overused the whammy bar but I liked his style and it didn't bother me for some reason.

I think that Brad is an amazing player that had some big shoes to fill and not alot of time to prepare for it. He was most definitely winging it and under the circumstances, I think that he crushed it and I was fortunate enough to see RR twice..

I met him after they did the speak of the Devil show here in NYC and he couldnt have been cooler or more down to earth..
