Brent Hinds (ex-Mastodon) died last night.

Here’s an example of how rad of a creative player that dude was.
From his hillbilly banjo’esk micro-melodies
to his Alex Lifeson on all the LSD at Woodstock plus what was under Jimi’s headband-over sharded timing signatures..

He finds the nuggets.
He’s the type of player where no matter who in the world is in the same room with a guitar on -he’s the lead guitar player.
That presence & mystique..always on the rock-n-roll raunchy side of the coin.
-he def don’t give a fuck, it’s all about the music.

Like if Joe Perry stepped in the room with a guitar on..-he’s the lead guy before he even plays a note.
Bummer man..likely had somethin’ to do with something’ sketchy..that one moment nobody knows what really happened…
This song also demonstrates the brotherly love beteeen the band and the amazing drummer of course, -DAYUM that guy humbles me on the drums.
Brent displays his MVP moments with dimensionally deep. & twisted lead vocals-MONSTOROUS.

Love the greasy candor up in that vocal booth..
He’s an irreplaceable.
Rest in BEAST.

At my age..I’ve come to a new understanding .How fragile life actually is.
We protect ourselves, general safety, practice mindfulness etc-our lives so that we don’t lose the ultimate thing we have-life.
But it can be gone in a nano second..that phone call that changes your world forever,
all was well and a simple accident occurs resulting in a human losing the ultimate most protected thing they have..their life and time left on this side of the f’n dirt.
We really do run out of time..
Change is the only constant.

We’re actually different since you just read my above typed words, we are a few frog’s hairs older, LO..whatever.
These days.. it’s the damn.,,
‘gravy without the train’, ya hear?

Ya know, that’s what I want to know,
-how’a you holding up after all these years?

This dude’s death
‘grabbed me by the Boo-Boo’…

They always seemed like a band I would like, I just never really listened to them. All of his interviews and stuff he seemed really cool, funny and laid back. The other guitarist struck me as the opposite though…real douche… I hate that everything went down the way it did with him getting fired. Also last week he posted a pretty scathing rebuke of the band. Sad…they were together for 25 years…

A lot of anti-motorbike sentiment. I’ve been on and around them since childhood. Known and even seen death. That said, I ride.

Not saying car drivers aren’t terrible. However, I find watching YouTube videos of bike riders, they are way worse. Own worst enemies. I ride quite aggressively, but I also ride to be out of the way and I never trust intersections.

I don’t want to cast aspersions, however Brent was known to drink and live a certain way. Someone I know got killed at an intersection by a driver that ran through. However, the someone I knew was also drinking all night, had 3 hours sleep and went riding.

All I’m saying, bikes can be fun. Having kids now though has even got me rethinking it.

Anyway, Mastodon will never be Mastodon without Brent. Integral. I’m just glad we got what we got from them.

Absolutely hard to fathom his life being taken right in the middle of their breakup and him slagging them off. Going to be a lot of regrets and guilt, even though I suspect they aren’t the monsters he portrayed them as. It’s hard work dealing with hard living people.

Band of the modern era if you ask me. My generation missed the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, etc. There never seemed like those kind of bands for my era. Mastodon felt like that for me.

i also ride, but not aggressively. I see the videos you're talking about of guys on bikes just being downright dumb. Alot of the think they own the road, which is strange considering one bump from a car and they lose.

I love riding, but I don't love other riders that much.

I love Mastodon. Never been the biggest Hinds' fan, but they don't exist without him. Kinda rough watching a guy fall from grace and be gone forever in a 6 month window. For all his issues, music is no better off without him. RIP.

Good stuff here.
You sound like a person who’s been through a lot!
