I was thinking about the history of late nite hosts. Not sure about Letterman but the rest came totally (or very largely) from stand-up or other types of comedy backgrounds. IIRC Kimmel was doing bits for NFL pregame shows...I think that was his only "claim to fame" which definitely separates him from the others and why I always wondered why he became host of a nationally televised program? The search for hosts must have been desperate at the time.

He was co-host of The Man Show with Adam Carolla way back when for whatever that may be worth.

I saw an old interview, recently, with Carson; while he made fun of politicians of all sides, he said his job was to be entertaining, not educational, or something similar. He realized if he took a political side, he's lose half his audience.

He was fired by Bob Iger. A liberal. Probably Iger wants it to look like the president did it, but the fact is he was done either way. Like all late night talk shows.
