How about not tweek the tone at all. Leave everything at 12 o'clock. Use the same mic at the same distance and cone placement. This way you are not favoring the first cab at all. Or have 3 EQ tweeks and record all three for each cab. :dunno:

what if 12 o clock sounds bad on all of them.

Lots of amps sound best with certain things on ten or zero.

You`d still hear the characteristics of each cab :)
If it sounds bad, you can decide what kind of bad you like best

Everything at noon is where you start on any amp when you demo n00b. If it sounds like total shit at those settings just walk away................just walk away.

I say dial in each cab to its sound best. And I'm no Noob.

Oh, and since this is a cab comparison, please try to use more than 1 mic. One on the grill, and a room mic. Reason being that close miking only will feature mostly speaker tone. You have to stand back a bit and hear the cab resonating the room to hear the cab tone. Hopefully a room mic will help pick that up.

This ought to be interesting. I'll check in on this thread when I get back from the amp show.

Clips aren't even made yet, but let the bitching ensue.

No shit, I'm starting to think if I do this I'll just not post the clips and wait for this thread to sink in the sunset. :) I've actually thought about just using my Zoom to record the 'room sound' only, with no close miking so placement won't be a factor.

If you're going to do this, based on my previous experiences, you'll need to document a few things for each cab to do it right. That's because you'll get all of these questions if you don't, and probably negate or invalidate your test results.

1) Cab size (HxWxD), wood construction (baltic birch, MDF, etc), grill cloth on cab
2) Speakers installed (ohm rating, power handling specs)
3) Wiring method used: series/parallel, or parallel/series (yes there is a difference!).
4) Wire gauge used in each cab to wire the speakers.
5) Amp model/type used, EQ settings, new or old glass
6) Guitar used, pickups, pots/caps

Then again, what the hell do I know, right? Do what you want! (Good luck, sir!)

I've never heard a Soldano, Bogner, or Mesa sound decent with everything at noon.

"Just walk away" reminds me of:

You can do the comparison as you like. Or don't, it doesn't matter to me.

You could do 2 sets of clips - 1 set where the settings are the same for each one, and another set where you tweak the amp to where each cab sounds best. Wouldnt' take that much more time since you'll already have the mic on the cab's.

To really get an idea of how the characteristics of each cab sounds with the one demo amp I would do 3 different clips for each. I know it would be a pain in the ass but with the first clip with the amp settings at noon you would have a base sound, then with settings pulled back to maybe nine o'clock you would hear how each cab responds to that change, and maybe for the third clip you could dime all the controls to show how the cabs respond to those settings. This way its still a controlled test rather than you dialing in what you think sounds good with each cab.

Or......... just get an Axefx..

Would love to hear clips of the Silver jubilee through the various cabs.

I made a excel file matrix for my amps and cabs so I know what works well with what. I posted it here a while back, but no one cared, but than again I didn't have any clips.

Yeah Pete there is no way you would make everyone happy with this no matter the work so I would not bother myself. Now if you tweaked the crap out of one cab and revealed that it was some peavey butcher cab and it destoyed bogner, mills, spawn, etc........................

Not that would be entertainment :hys: :hys: :hys:

I did have a Peavey VTM cab - was loaded with Celestion 85s, sounded GREAT! But the wood was thicker than a Marshall and it was heavy as hell.

I could point the Q3 at the following................

Aiken Mojo 4x12 greens
Diezel NYC no handles 4x12 H30s
CAE 4x12 v30s
Mesa 1/2 back 4x12 mc90s
Bogner os 2x12 v30s

Yeah, for cabinets I do not fly just one flag   Cheap is the only requirement for me to check it out

Done it with the same amp and cab and different speakers...

Thanks for the post.
I liked the Celestion Classic Lead 80 (used) & Eminence Custom

I wonder if the Celestion Classic Lead 80 (new) eventually breaks in to sound like the Celestion Classic Lead 80 (used) or if manufacturing has changed thus changing the tone??????

I also liked the used CL80 in those clips. I think I'm getting tired of so much speaker breakup influencing my tone. The CL80 seems to "stay together" better while still sounding relatively warm and crunchy.
I wonder if the WGS British Lead 80 sounds similar to the used CL80 in this clip??
