It's not a question of need I guess. Really, more of a want.

I'm just a hobbiest/bedroom player so I already don't "need" what I have.

Well then, let me direct you to the world of Divided by 13!! My amp of choice... here's a custom one I had Fred make for me:

Dual power section... 6V6 (half power mode) and EL34 (full power). Awesome cleans and great Marshall-ish grind!

I have played all three and owned the SE+...for 2 days. Returned it. I thought the high gain was fizzy compressed....just bleh! The cleans were amazing though. Definitely try one before you buy because many people feel the same way about the SE+. Some people love it, too. I got it from Tone Merchants and I got all my money back but normally they charge 10% I think for returns. Noel was cool about it since it was a misunderstanding about the mods that were actually done on it.

This Reb Beach video where he uses the SE+ sounds pretty accurate of the tone I was getting with it . It does sound cool for leads but high gain rhythm tone IMO sounded just....not right. Mine had 5881 tubes and regular trannies while alot of people really like the el34s with plexi trannies. Suhr said he would charge me $200 for the plexi trannies and put in el34s for free but he also said that if I did not like the tone as it was already, the mods would do little to change that and el34s would actually make the cleans not as 'Fender-ish'...so I just returned it.

I was under the impression he was still using the SE and hadn't got his SE upgraded to the '+'?
It's confusing because some people will tell you it's not a '+' without the plexi trannies and el34s but I was told it is a '+' if it has the whomp switch and the improved unboosted mode with more gain than the SE version, which does not have to include having plexi trannies and el34s. It's easy to get confused and that's where Noel at Tone Merchants was confused as well, which is why I got a full refund.
According to the Suhr site it says he is using the SE+ but regardless of which version he was using here, the video is accurate of the lead tones I was able to get.

The CAE does not have the low end of the Uber or Herbert, not even close.
I don't agree with that. The SE+ with whomp full on has an insane amount of low end. I've owned all 3 and had the SE+ to compare to both the Uber and the Herbert and IMO the SE+ had a comparable of low end.

I had no problem dialing in some killer "heavy" tones with the SE+. That said I feel the Uber and Herbert may be better suited to faster, more technical brutal stuff. Single notes on the SE+ are ridiculously punchy and fat, which make it excel at leads. However, I found for fast rhythm stuff that the fatness tended to walk over itself causing it lack some tightness and clarity. I think the Uber and Herbert hold their composure better doing the fast stuff. I found it a little too squishy/compressed for "brutal" rhythm stuff too. For medium tempo chugga-chugga hardrock/metal it rips, but if you're looking for teh brootalz I'd say Uber or Herbert.

Interesting. I would definately like something on the tighter side. Maybe I should think about another SE - of the ENGL variety instead.

Every thread I could find on the SE+ said that the el34, plexi trannies and whomp switch were absolutely necessary. That'd be the only way I go.

ENGL SE > CAE OD100 SE+

I had my standard modded to a SE, When I received it back it had SE+ marked right after the serial number. I still have the 5881s, but John updated everything and added the Whomp and Blue lamps. I believe the SE+ has to do with the internal updates than El34s and plexi tranni.

od100se+ has fattest single notes for lead playing and cool clean but was one of the harder amps to dial in for my tastes on the low end

herbert has great flexibility and is very racy and tight and easier to dial a tone i liked but all seemed more modern versus vintage.
i do remember liking it more than the xtc classic on hand.

uberschall had the sweetest dropped d ultra grind tones and felt spongier to play. also really liked the clean tones.
