Why don't you guys take this to the playground after school? :boxer: :D

"point",the amps in my opinion dont have the extended highend-brightness thats needed for early van halen, just my opinion....
How much time have you spent dialing in the high end on either one of these amps? I'm guessing you're judging by listening to others play and twist the knobs. I've never played the Atomica, but the Marsha can be dialed in to slice your face right off the front of your head...it has all of the "extended highend-brightness" that could ever want. Speakers, miking, etc also play a role...if you think VHI tone is what was coming directly out of Ed's speakers...

It's not really a fight. Looks more to me like Steve is working out on the heavy bag.

Really..  well if your looking for early Van halen(78-81)in my opinion Rockstah Mod5(Mark Abrahamin) is the way to go.Since his death the amps that he made and modded are going for sick money I was offered $3500 for the amp Mark modded for me and a friend that owns one was offered $3k.
You should have taken the $3500. It is an easy mod that is well documented over at Metro. Mark's excellent VH-style playing and well thought out reverb setting are a large portion of what people hear in those clips he did.

Steve

very true, steve! i had a Mod5 Ceriatone Plexi 50w amp that Mark A modded for me back in 2009 when he was still on the metroamps forum.it sounded really good, but a GOOD chunk of the tone that you hear in his clips IS his chops....PERIOD! the guy played VH just great! the mod itself is just a hot 2204 circuit with a ppimv added, nothing special........just my 2 cents ;)

...btw,hello,Derek! sorry to further "help along" in the derailment of your initial thread subject

How different sound the old Friedman Marsha and the new friedman BE-100? that could make a diference since this test was done with a Marsha and not the BE-100 like on the Phil X Video..

So I'd take the $3500 on the amp you have, buy an old Marshall for $900 and get someone to put that spec in for a couple hundred... There is nothing magic about your amp...

This is where we differ. I'm a bit of a "sentimental fool" so I'd hang onto the amp Mark modded, without a doubt.

I find I'm a sentimental fool about everything. I have a hard time letting go of gear once I own it period. Unless it sucks. Then good riddance.

Nice work.

They sound pretty similar to me in the few parts of the video I skipped around to. What setting did you have the Cameron diode clipping rear knob on?

Both amps were set at high-gain so the Atomica diode clipping knob was set all the way to the right for the highest level of diode clipping. The front "edge" switch was also set to the right for the 2nd most amount go gain (all the way to the left would be most gain). For the Marsha I also had the "Sat" switch on.

I believe a lot of the "nazzle" people are hearing is coming from the Webber NeoMag speaker. It's very bright and brittle but adds just enought sizzle (to me anyways) for the early VH tone (by the way David Bray is the one who recommended the speaker to me). I did add a speaker refelctor or "beam blocker" to spead some of the bright sound as the cone is actually aluminum but it's covered up in the pictures by the beam blocker.
Although included in this thread, I think for vh tones David brays stuff is much better suited.

As for the argument, both are right in a way. Steve is just saying that the player has a lot to do with getting a great vh sound and that there's no magic dust sprinkled on amps by certain modders that couldn't be easily installed by someone else if needed. However, I believe nitro was saying that gear also has a lot to do with it. For example-- if Kirk Hammett was joining a vh cover band   he would have a better chance with a mod 5 then a crate bv. Nothing is a guarantee though and many think that it's as easy as buying the right gear, when chops are the biggest part.

Read the thread closely. There is the contention that KH would sound EVH esqe if he had the right gear. It turned into a downhill rolling wad of shit shortly afterward....

And my JP6 makes me sound so much like Petrucci

New BE 100 is different then this amp for sure. Also I never really set out to do a VH amp. It does all sorts of sounds. There has been circuit refinements transformer changes etc.

The demo Phil x did with the be-100 is badass for sure! I dig it.
