You tell me...

As a JP2C owner... imho yes you can.

Hey Wizard,

What cab/speaker combo do you use with your JP2C?

I'm partial to the Bogner UberKab frontloaded version with 16 Ohm V30/GT75 combo... I've also got a Wizard 4X12 with V30/H75 combo that rocks too. Either cab would do the 87 WS Sykes tone.

If I remember correctly Sykes used 2 different speaker cabs for that album...one was a Marshall with G12 65s and the other a Boogie halfback with C90s and EVs. We do have a member here that knows, and is pretty close to Mr Sykes. I think his name is Drew? He knows what John used on each song lol....

I use a couple of old Mesa half back cabs with the metal grills with the old Black Shadow Mesa/Emminence MS12 speakers. Tasty.

Honestly, before I shipped that quad to you I thought that those speakers with my 2C++ sounded very close to Sykes 87 tone.....

And now I think they sound real close to Sykes tone, great speakers, I totally agree with psychodave that they're the best match for a Mark series Boogie.

Between a JP2C, Bogner Shiva or an EVH 5153 Stealth, which one would you choose for Whitesnake and other heavy metal tones (Megadeth, Sabbath, etc)?

I'll second that, and I don't even have a JP2C... I do, however, have a Mark III, Studio/395, and Quad/295. If/when I want a "Whitesnake" tone, any one of those will get me there faster than anything else. Wizard's right... it's not even close. I have a Mark IV and a Triaxis/290, too, but they're a little further away from that particular tone.

If you don;t mind me asking, what were the amp and EQ settings? (If you recall...)

JP2C for sure. The MIDI in the JP2C is a thing of beauty for controlling the amp in a live situation with effects, having 2 dirty channels and a clean channel and 2 GEQs is a Godsend as well. Iommi used Mesa Mark series amps back in the 80s, as did Brad Gillis (with both Ozzy and Night Ranger), Stryper has been a Boogie Mark series band for a long time, Lamb of God with the Mark IVs, so I’d say the JP2C will handle metal just fine.

Agree with all....
Iommi used a 2B coli from what I read, and Gillis also a 2B with a stereo chorus splitting between 2 of them, I think an onboard boost on his strat was used rather than a boost pedal.
Sykes used Mark 3 Colis and also had 2C+s as well, don't know if he used them at all..

All the Mark series amps share a similar vibe. You should be able to get close using any Mark series amp really as long as you're up to the playing. I do think that using an EVM 12L speaker would help.

Funny thing, when I saw Blue Murder live Sykes was using Recto's and he sounded pretty awesome anyway. Boosted Rectos with an 808 or TS9 are pretty killer though.

Don't forget Chevelle, The Offspring who both used Mark IV's. Of course Dream Theater. In the past 9 years there's also been a LOT of bands using the Mark V. Right now I'm using my IV with another guitar who uses a Marshall JCM900 and they're blending well. He wants an 800 though.

What year was that Blue Murder show with the rectos ? I’ve seen some clips of tunes from around ‘95 and he sounds amazing !!! He actually used a Racktifier, no ?
