Can't decide on a metal rig, so tell me what to get.

Forgive me for such a subjective and newb question as one of my first posts - I change my mind far too much and I am far too indecisive to make any firm decisions on things, so I basically just want the people that know more than me to tell me what kind of rig/setup to get.

I'm looking for a real "analog" metal rig (I will be using DI's and VST's for recorded tones so don't need to go that route), and I prefer no modeling (nothing against it, just prefer an analog setup and simple amp-cab config). I don't play very often, but when I do it's mostly at home so bedroom and quiet/apartment level playing are important (though in the rare chance I find a drummer to jam with or the even rarer chance I found a band to gig with down the road I'd like something that could hang in that situation also). Stylistically, I play metal (not one specific type or genre, but definitely modern/heavier stuff and less "classic" metal) but like flexibility for the other 2% of the time I want to play crunchy midgain or clean stuff (don't we all). Something that doesn't take up a ton of room (I'm limited on available space) and is fairly easily portable is important too - 4x12's out of the question, stuff easy to move like cabs with casters = yay, you get the idea. I won't be using a ton of pedals - at most a tuner, overdrive or boost, gate, delay. Basically just looking for guidance to an amp and a cab, hopefully I'm effectively conveying what I am looking for. I don't mind spending a bit to get the right or best option, but I wouldn't want to spend more than around $1000 tops for the head and ideally not more than $600-700 for a cab (open to combos if needed too but prefer the feel/response of a dedicated closed back cab).

With that total budget, I’d get 5150 and a Fryette Fat Bottom cab loaded with Fane speakers.

i have a 6505 mini that i absolutely love. sounds like the features would fit the bill. the gain channel is just mean sounding. the clean channel with a boost def is a great tone for hard rock as well. very versatile. Orange cab would be cool.

I got my Mesa Rectoverb (Single Rec 50) for $490 and a Mesa Traditional Slant cab with Mesa V30s for $450. Guitar Center used. And yeah, the Mesa 212 cabs are really good.

I just picked up a Synergy SYN1 preamp and the SLO module and I think it really sounds good and is very practical for playing at home (very flexible on volume, can plug in direct to interface with very good tone) but at the same time it is a proper tube preamp so you can get loud through a power amp / cab. Unit is relatively small so it's very easy to bring to a gig and use through whatever amp they have there.

I've only tried the SLO module and it's definitely good for metal but I'm sure you get good tones using other modules as well. You will need a power amp to play through a cab though.

I would take a look at a mesa mkiv and. Mesa 2x12" very versatile, and betwee all of the volumes, they sound AWESOME at quiet levels. I would consider running EL34's in there too.

On the cheap I also like the JSX. Great cleans and a decent variety of gain great quiet and loud.

Agree with the suggestions above. A lot of great choices out there. Keep in mind that in addition to tube amps, there are analog options out there that are not associated with modeling. I don't gig anymore but years ago I was using a Tech 21 PSA-1 preamp into a Mosvalve MV-962 power amp and into a Marshall 4x12. I was always getting questions about my setup and people ranting and raving about my tone and "what tubes were in my Mesa" and stuff like that.

Just a few suggestions of mine in addition to what everyone else already said:

- Since you like heavier stuff, I'd say away from any "Marshall" type cabs. As others mentioned, Orange, Mesa, Bogner, etc. I have to agree that the 5150 is a good choice. I saw Sevendust live and they were using those and unbelievably crushing tone. Eric in Testament was using those as well, among others. I think people expect classic tone and nothing else with those amps but they do the heavies.

As someone that previously was in bands since the 80s, just some suggestions if you even remotely plan on being in a band. Think about how much gear you want to haul back and forth to practice and gigs. Think about how easy/difficult it is to swap tubes out and what your backup is if something goes wrong. I just mention these things because people get caught up in tones and forget some of the smaller things that get lost in the shuffle when thinking about getting a rig.

Also, just a sidenote. Think about what bands you really like or have seen live and the tones you like. Use that as a base to figure out what you might want to purchase gear wise. Whenever I do stuff like that, it takes all of these choices in my brain and whittles it down to what works financially, tone wise, weight wise, etc. I'm like that with everything I buy though. I just try to get to a point where I can focus on a handful of choices. Make the final decision way easier. Good luck!

@romanianreaper that is sound advice.

Screw 4x12"s for gigging. IMO I would go 2x12" and when I was gigging I used 2x12"s.

Also keep in mind that 2x12" combos weigh in from 80-100lbs.

Casters are a godsend.

The less you need with you the better. If i am around the house I use more pedals than at a gig.

Keep in mind that at a gig maybe 1% of people notice that you are using something extremely fancy or expensive or rare. My top end stuff stays home other than guitars. I will gig my 2x12" mesa Nomad 100 w/GEQ for metal at a gig and not need anything, but at home prefer a mesa mk or rec and a big pedal board. But the Nomad is 90 lbs but on casters.

Backups are important. I keep something on hand at a gig, but only once have needed it. BUT you don't need a $2k backup rig, just something to get by and get through. I keep a tech 21 fly rig in the car if I am going through FOH and a modded Peavey VK if not.

You should always have backup tubes with you. Regardless.

I will spout some more thoughts when I sober up. Lol

5150 III 50W. or PRS MT-15 and a 212 cab.

If gigging personally would go for more than 15 watts, but IMO and YMMV.

Krank 1x12 cab is the king of bedroom metal. Comes stock with an Eminence Legend, handles 120 watts. $100-200.

Pair with a lunchbox amp of your choosing (Peavey Valveking Mini is surprisingly good). The PRS MT15 looks cool too.

Agreed. The 5150 III 50 will eat the MT-15 alive at band volumes.

Ceriatone Chupacabra or Yeti
Peavey XXX, XXX II, JSX, 5150, 5150 II, 6505
Fender EVH 5150 III
PRS Archon 50 or 100

These are all high gain KILLERS with excellent master volumes for under a grand.
