Hey Guys,

I placed the order on a "Carpet Era" Carvin X100b head earlier this afternoon... Hopefully I'll have it by my next gig this weekend... We shall see...

I've seen a lot of forums dedicated to the X100b (one that's recent) and to the other models like the older early-80's ones and the reissue model... But I'm more into hearing about the late-80's/early-90's ones when they decided to make the heads and cabs look like scratching posts for cats. :) So, I'm just curious who all out there owns one that actually digs it. I hear a lot of gripes about them from some people, others worship them. Any videos I've heard of them out there have wowed me enough to go in on one. I've been running Line 6 stuff for the last few years with nothing but headaches. My latest rig is just a tech's worst nightmare so I'm getting away from all that crap. Just a tube head and a few pedals is what I'm going for. The current plan (which will probably change, I'm sure...) is to run the rhythm channel and kick on my MXR Distortion III for leads and back the volume on my guitar for cleans... I'll run a channel switcher if I have to but I'm trying to avoid it and just keep it all to pedals... Any flaws so far??

I should specify that I play mainly Hard Rock and 80's Hair stuff. I'm into guys like Al Pitrelli, John Sykes, and Doug Aldrich. Not so much Eddie or any of those guys. More of the working players who didn't get the credit they should have. I'm not looking for total gain saturation and distortion up the wazoo... More medium-gain with some good character. Think Al Pitrelli in Widowmaker (anybody remember them?) kinda sound. Just a good, ballsy Rock guitar sound. Like this:

I've heard a lot of feedback on the Tolex-covered models and on the current reissue... But not much on the carpet era ones other than "they're ugly".... Any feedback on them? Not just "I bought one in 1990 and sold it in 1990 because it sucked." I dig specifics... ramble as much as you want, I'm all ears.

I had one briefly about 10 years ago. IIRC the sound I got out of it was really an agressive kind of tone, very much reminiscent of the Megadeth Rust In Peace tone. I never gelled with the head for some reason.
