I like the tone of the Greenbacks, they just feel a little sluggish to me after playing some other speakers. Was thinking of trying CL80's - any advice or opinions? TIA!
I had a Classic Lead 80 (along with a G12H30) in my last cab. I thought it was a great combination and they balanced each other well. The draw back to me (and I'm not a speaker expert) is that that speaker can be a bit bassy and possibly have too much overhead. If those are things you are looking for then I would recommend it. For example, I always mic'd the G12H30.
Another recommendation I would have would be the Splawn Small Block speakers. They are made by Eminence and are G12M clones basically. I think they are 55w each and just happen to work really well with Splawns. I have them in my new 212 Splawn cab. They still retain the bass I so desire but they are still crisp if that makes sense. Sorry, I suck at describing speakers.
In comparison to GB's, Lead 80's will be colder and stiffer sounding. Not that they are those things, but they are when compared to GB's.
Lead 80's take high gain and high volume like champs, but they are a pretty big transition straight from GB's.
I would look into some ET65's for some GB type mids and crunch and with lows that stay together better at high volumes.
I've never owned a Greenback cab to make a comparison myself (though I really want to!) but I've heard that V30's are like Greenbacks with a shift in the mids and higher power handling. I really like the way my V30's sound and feel at high volumes, just enough give but still plenty of definition. The Greenbacks are something that I'd really like to try, but I don't think I've got the right amp for it right now.
