Uncommon V30 speaker mixes

Dude I ran V30’s in an X pattern with Splawn Small Blocks. That cabinet kicked all kinds of ass

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I've figured out my top options. If I go 412 with the V30's I'll mix them with some Celestion S12-150 Sidewinders; that's Celestion's take on the EVM12L. If I go 212/115 it'll either be a Weber Blue Dog 15" or Wolverine. Those are Weber's take on a Celestion Blue and EVM-15L respectively.

Of course I don't have to commit to anything right this moment so there's still some room to explore other options. So if anyone has other suggestions I'm still open to them.

Both the Sidewinder and Wolverine are stamped frame speakers. Neither will deliver the immediate response, punch, articulation, and clarity at all volumes that a real cast frame will deliver.

I’m more of a fan of pairing similarly voiced speakers together ie bright-british with bright-british. A good example being V30 with CV-75. I’m excited to try V30 with Karnivore when I get some.

The problem I find with pairing bright with dark speakers is that you get the worst of both worlds with any given amp EQ settings. Your overall tone is both harsh and muddy, with either getting worse when trying to correct for the other.

Ha! I kinda forgot I posted that thread. That was also before I bought the quad of V30's (which are in the Armageddon cab now) and changed plans a little. I'm cleaning out my garage to convert it into my music space and mapping out how I want to set it up. Moving my stuff into double the space I currently have means I can fit more cabs. Along with the couple cabs I have now I'll also be building myself some custom ones. I have most everything figured out except for the Armageddon cab and my 212/115.

Basically I'll have 3 groups of amps/cabs, Modern style, Vintage Style, and Bass/Down-tune. The 2 mentioned cabs can go with either the Modern or Bass/Down-tune depending on the speakers.

Here's what's mostly set in stone as far as cabs in each group

Modern:
  • 412 - Weber Grey Wolf x Wever Silver Wolf
  • 212/215 - Eminence Karnivore x Eminence Legend 1518
  • 212/215 - Weber Grey Wolf x Weber Blue Dog 15"

Vintage:
  • 612 - Sextet Weber Legacy 40oz magnet 75Hz cone
  • 212/215 - Celection V30 x Celestion Fullback
  • 415 - Quad Celestion Fullback
  • 415 - Quad Celection Sidewinder 15" or Quad EVM-15L or Weber Werewolf (dependent on price & availability).
Bass/Down-tune:
  • GK-Neo412 bass cab
  • Ashdown 610 bass cab
The 2 left over are my Armageddon 412 and my 212/115 cab. I know I'll have 2 V30's in one cab and 2 Weber Black Shuck in the other. I know what I would do with the Black Shucks either way so the final outcome is more dependent on which cab the V30's go in. Basically, do I want to pair them with 2-12" speakers or a 15" speaker.

Checking out the V30 x EVM-12L mix sounds promising, more than my original thought of CL80's. That also gives me another thought of maybe a V30 x EVM-15L mix in the 212/115 cab???
I was savoring this discussion just fine and then I arrived at your cab lineup and nearly fainted. Amazing collection!

I have a couple vertical 2x12s by Moon Custom with 100-watt Weber Gray and Silver Wolves, and they sound absolutely amazing with Marshally amps. (JCM, Ceriatone Yeti and Ceriatone JJ.) They need some volume to open up, though.

I don’t like them as much with my SLO. For that, I just set up a Mojotone Grand Canyon 4x12 with Swamp Thangs and Legend V128s in an X-pattern. Talk about punch!

I also have a 2x15 from Moon with Weber Wolverines. I pair that with an Avatar 2x12 loaded with Fane F70s for some extra sizzle when it’s fuzz time through the Model T.

Finally, I’ve got a vertical Emperor with a Fane F70 and Redback that also sounds great with Marshally amps.

Anyway, to bring it back a little closer to your original question, I should note that I’ve been looking at tilt-back 6x12s (from Moon or Atlas) and wondering about speaker pairings.

I have a lot of high-powered speakers because I like to switch in a 200-watt Science Earthling and 150-watt Model T. Down the road, I was also considering a Hi-Tone HT200 (essentially a DR201).

As a result, I’ve avoided V30s… but I guess a 6x12 would solve that.

I was considering V30s and Black Shucks in a zig-zag pattern, though I’m starting to wonder if that might pose a challenge with the eq, as I hear the Black Shucks are extremely dark. My intuition suggests the contrast would be complementary, but other commenters in this thread are making me wonder if extreme contrasts are self-defeating.

Any thoughts? Have you mixed the Black Shucks?

Other options are G12H-75s and Bloodhounds, which I understand have more high-end sizzle.

V30/G12H30 is a sick combo.

I have two separate Mesa V30 and CL80 cabs. They pair well together independently but have never mixed them in the same cab. I think both speakers high end freqs would clash be a bit too much in the same box tho.

Mixing different V30 flavors is cool. You said no WGS but I have a top/bottom mix of MIC V30s and old label Vet30s in another cab that smokes at all volumes.
Would you put the G12H30 on Top & the V30's on the bottom?

Mixing speakers when the efficiency is too different tends to produce dubious results IMO. I'd try to stay with something with a 1w/1m efficiency between 99 dBSPL and 101 dBSLP.

Candidates:
EVM12L Black Label or Pro-Line
EVM12L Classic or Series II
EVM12L Mesa Black Shadow
CL80 or Mesa Black Shadow version
G12H-75 Creamback
G12H-150 Redback
Pretty much any of the eminence 12" Legend speakers

You can also help match up speakers that might otherwise have an excessively large efficiency gap by putting a low-ohmage 100W power resister in line with the louder type of speaker. Think through your series-parallel design and calculate the total ohmage and where the current goes and power is being dissipated to make sure you're not being dumb but it does work. Be sure to take into account both the power that's dissipated by the resistor (no noise) and the overall drop in current through that rail (because resistance increased).

I haven't had an opportunity to play Black Shucks yet. This is an IR from Seacow cabs that I think would represent them really well. I say that because I have Grey Wolfs and Silver Wolfs. Seacow's IR of those sound almost identical to what I hear in the room.

If you haven't already found this, here's a video comparing the Sidewinder and 12L:

Interesting i was gonna recc the sidewinder and 12L

I haven’t heard that exact pair, but Classic Leads usually sit nicely with V30s for a fuller top end.
