Im trying to sort out some pickups for my Charvel pro mod.

Wondering what pickups other people have?

Need some that will be versatile enough to go from classic rock/blues all the way through to metal. To be used in a cover band

Amps are a Marshall JVM and Mes Mark III, through 2x12 with Celestion Lynchbacks.

I really like the Dimarzio Super Distortion and Liquifire combo, but dont want two idenical guitars.

Currently have a Seymour Duncan Custom Customer and 59 in the guitar.

Want do you think, what works for you??

Looking at either Dimarzio or Duncan, nothing boutique. Thanks guys!

I have several Charvels - 2 ith JB's in the bridge, a SD custom in one and BK Holy Diver in another. YMMV

How do you find the custom?

I'm not much of a JB fan...

Im tempted by the duncan custom, as its looks similar to the Dimarzio Super Distortion. Have you ever compare those two?

I like it alot. Thick and rich with a good sizzle. I know lots of ppl dont like JB's but I like the kerrang they get. The Holy Diver is similar to a JB but tighter so I would avoid that if you dont like JB's.

I use a BK VHII in my charvel star....
No neck pickup...

different wood and bridge combos make the most difference....what works for me in my koa floyded charvel may not work for yours. I'm a dimarzio guy.

For me the tone zone, super 3, air zone pickups are what work for me in the bridge.

Neck is a lot more tricky....for me now it's the sustainiac neck. Since that doesn't apply here, before that it was the evo neck or paf pro, paf joe, or bluesbucker.

jb is tricky, in the wrong guitar it can sound thin and brash, in a guitar with thick low mids(like a alder strat)to balance it out it can really kick ass.

Yeah i know what you mean. I find the Custom Custom a touch thin, has some much mid range. Love the Super Distortion in my other pro mod.

Think im gonna try a tone zone/air norton combo perhaps

I didn't like the TZ in my SoCal. Way too boomy. Swapped it for a JB but since you don't like the JB's...

+1 - this exactly!

Just got my San Dimas Pro Mod with a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge back to work and I gotta say I'm loving it !

I have the Motor City Angel Dust A2 set in my Charvel MIJ So Cal, and an underwound Angel Dust A5 in my 2005 reissue pointy headstock that will be changed out with the Garuda when I get around to it.

The other guitarist in my band has three of them. Jb/59 in one, underwound MCP Afwayu in another and SD Distortion/ 59 in the other. The SD Distortion is my favorite of the three, sounds killer through his JVM and my MKIII.

The vid was made with the Orville LPC on the right w/a SH-5 Duncan Custom with gold cover.

Both LP's have Seymour Custom/59 pups.

I have the RTM pickup which comes stock in my Warren DeMartini signature but it is based on a JB, so I don't think you would like it. I used to own the SD Distortion in a few guitars and loved that pickup. Had a great 80's hard rock tone.

It's perfect, the 59 is deep, full, throaty, brite, but not too brite for an Alnico, it's the shit for Les Pauls IMO.

Love the Ceramic mag of the Duncan Custom. I read an interview with Seymour and heard somewhere else that the Duncan Custom was suppose to be endorsed by EVH but the deal fell thru. Also heard the JB was spose to be Jeff Becks pup too [JB]. I know some call it Jazz/Blues.
To me the JB is not a Jazz or Blues pup at all. It's a rock pup but i find it fuzzy/fizzy with a spongy bottom.

Again YMMV but I have found a difference when comparing pups in LP's to alder strats with maple boards and floyds. Really you just need to try them and see what works in your guitar.

The Super Distortion is a personal fav with my US Charvel, was pretty much luv at first listen so I never experimented much after that. I also have a Custom Shop which came with a Duncan Custom 5 and I also really like that as it's a nice compliment to the SD, so again, left well enough alone, lol. There are some other great choices with alder Charves obviously - which is part of their appeal, they can be highly 'personalized'...sooo many dudes with Charvels yet you hardly ever see two that look/sound the same.

Here is a WIP vid I'm ssssllllllowly making for a new track of mine using the Charvels + mentioned pickups here (although charveldan slammed the tone door behind him....KILLER tone in that clip!)

bareknuckles! any model. i have a nailbomb in my 80s so cal
