Looks like it's probably just the face of quarter sawn curly Maple to me (could be flat sawn... dunno). I think what confuses people is the figuring/flame. The direction of the figuring is NOT a grain, it's actually perpendicular to the grain so people think there are two grain directions. The grain on that guitar is front to back, even though it's going all over the place and is very curly.

Quite a beautiful top. A lot of people seem to like there to be almost no discernible grain on figured tops. I think distinct grain patters like this guitar are way more unique and beautiful than the perfect flamed top.
