By the way, my house will be paid off in a couple months and I own the house next door free and clear. Entire property surrounded by 6’ privacy fence except the back line which faces the river. I also own a house down the block which my daughter is buying from me. She’ll have it paid off later this year too. I used to own the house across the street. Me and my father in law gutted it and rebuilt it. He lived in it until he died then we sold it to her brother. So my kid and my brother in law are neighbors. Plus we owned a house 30 miles north in the town we both grew up in near the STL county line. Sold it a decade ago.

Once you own your house, you may be able to self-insure depending on local/state laws.

I watched a story of a couple in Florida whose property was damaged in a storm (wind and water), and they got very little from the insurance company for the damage so they decided to cancel their wind and flood insurance, and just have basic minimal homeowner / liability insurance or a catastrophic insurance with a high deductible, I don't remember.

The money they would pay the insurance companies for structure, content, wind and water insurance they're putting into an investment/savings account to cover future damage costs should they experience another storm.

Once my house is paid off, I plan to do the same; I haven't looked in awhile, but I think for FEMA assistance we are required to have wind & water insurance here, IIRC. Here it is:

National Flood Insurance Program. Properties in high-risk flood zones that have a federally backed mortgage are required to maintain flood insurance.

I have homeowners insurance and wind & water insurance for now.

On April 18 2017 my little brother died of a fentanyl overdose. He thought he was doing some other drug.
My little brother died in 2009 of a heroin overdose, he was studying for his last final and graduated posthumously from college the day we buried him which was also my birthday. His roommates swore he only took some pills but the autopsy said it was a heroin overdose and he had been using months before but supposedly gotten clean.

Now all of these years later I wonder as back then there was the occasional incident when some dealer's coke would kill a few clients over the weekend as it was cut with something but back then they weren't really hip to the fentanyl thing. Regardless, it really destroyed my dad for years and only in the past several has he gone back to being his old self. My condolences to you and your family, man.

My condolences brother. I’m glad your dad found a little peace. My dad did too. Unfortunately via dementia.

Sorry had a plumbing emergency at my son’s house. So I developed a hole in my esophagus which caused a lung to collapse and I went septic. Was on a vent and was split open. Had a feeding tube for 14 weeks. Couldn’t eat or drink. Everything was pumped into a j tube going into my duodenum. Anyway the wife is not good with math and she accidentally gave me 13 times my normal dose of liquid pain medicine. I was watching the 36 chambers of shaolin when this went down. Just went to sleep completely peaceful until the paramedic hit my with the narcan. Instantly knew where I was and what had happened. Crazy stuff….

Sorry to hear that @watson503.

Sucks mate.
Thank you, brother - and to @JackBootedThug and @Floyd Eye thank y'all, as well.

It was very sad but over time I've grown to have a host of emotions over it all. He was 14 years younger than me and I'm the one that originally found out he was using heroin and told my dad and my sister - and told him I did just that as I hoped he'd get some help. My dad took a real lackadaisical approach to it and did not grasp how serious this was. The best thing to happen was he got pulled-over with a cousin up at school and had cocaine on him, was put on probation and sentenced to do weekends in jail which scared the shit out of him, but not enough, I guess. The testing kept him clean but not totally as he eventually scored during finals and that was it. It is a total waste of life and the people he left behind like my dad and little sister will never be the same. I used to see that saying"Heroin Kills" and they sure aren't lying - and now with this fentanyl and tranq shit...? No fucking way.

My sister in law got strung out on pills. I knew it. Been trained to recognize it. Told my wife and then sat down with the mother in law and told her my suspicions. Of course I was a no good sum bitch and how dare I insult her and their family…about a month later feds picked her up for forging prescriptions and crossing state lines and doing it as well. I never gloated about it but her sister was shocked that I knew. She worked in the medical field and had access to a doctors prescription pad. Been years but she still fucks around with them whenever she can. The new thing is buying Suboxone strips. Wtf does that shit do? I have caught inmates with it before but I don’t know anything about it.

Two days later while I was cleaning up his bodily fluids off the carpet of his apartment my best friend and my laboror were shot to death in north St. Louis finishing my job. Then on the 29th the river came up and broke a 100 and something year old level record by 4’. The house had a foot of water in it and I lost nearly everything I own. A month or so later my daughter was rushed to the hospital for an emergency cesarean and my grand daughter was born, then died 32 hours later. 2017 suuuuucked.
Damn dude.. my condolences

I don't know but I fought a dude at work about ten years ago who was a regular suboxone user. I thought it was supposed to be for helping deal with addiction but dude was def addicted to it. He literally had a two second memory. Would get basic instructions, like one or two sentences worth, and would have to ask four or five more times to remember what was said. Total space cadet. He was a snitch so we had conflict.

Fuckin snitches man. I ran them out of my office at work. If they would tell on another inmate they would tell on me as well. Fuck em….hot mother fuckers….

I saw one video of them dealing with Suboxone coming in the prison (I think it was New Mexico but shit is everywhere of course) and idiots were putting the strips in their eyes - they're supposed to be taken sublingually but go figure LMMFAO I've got a thing with my eyes and no way I'd put anything in them...

Yep. He tried to narc me out to the boss for sitting on my ass smoking a cigar after I completed morning duties, which was my routine when it's 90+ degrees out. I caught him snearkily taking photos with his cell phone so I knew what was up. The boss is/was my best friend and his old man owned the business so all that happened is he called me and we had a good laugh about it haha. I was also the senior staff at that job. I probably shouldn't have squared up with him but he lied about it when I confronted him and then started talking shit to my face. It was one of those jobs where if you allowed any disrespect it would be all day, every day, so I couldn't let it go. Kinda like working in a prison I reckon.

That’s exactly what working in a prison is like. It’s a completely predatory environment including staff.
