George seemed like a very down to Earth, cool dude. Broderick seemed cool as well. Lynch's left hand seems like he has a disorder and can't feel the neck   …..But at the end of the day I'd rather listen to someone like Lynch fail half the time and play something really interesting the other half (OK, maybe 80/20) than someone like Broderick who's so mechanical and practiced. His technique is incredible but I don't listen to music much for technique. Cool vid.

Linked to another one with Marty Friedman and Ben Weinman? form Dillinger Escape Plan. That guy was smart and didn't bring a guitar….

I have great respect for both players.
Lynch is a stylist. You can generally tell its him when he's playing. He's developed a trademark sound and feel that is all him.

Broderick is great too. Technique/chops for days and I respect how much time and effort he's put into the instrument.

Both are great for different reasons. The converse is of course true as well.

that's the thing about Lynch, he's inconsistent. I heard him at NAMM plugging into a Diezel whipping off great runs and cool lines. other times it sounded like he just learned how to play the guitar

He would be the first to tell you that, actually. :) There are a bunch of interviews around where he flat out says that he is a "tone player" - meaning that of he isn't feeling the tone he can't even play right. I feel that because I am the same way... style is very dependent on tone.

A long time ago (1992), I got to meet him and his entire band and spent a few hours hanging out with them at the Gangplank Bar in Battle Creek, MI after a show where they opened for Warrant at Kellogg Arena. He didn't stay too long but he was very cool as was his whole band - who hung out until the bar closed.

Funny story - I gave Jani Lane my autograph that night because he was such a dickhead... We had won backstage passes and full access to the bands from WKLQ in Grand Rapids, MI for this show. So after Warrant got done playing, Jani Lane announced that they would be at the Gangplank Bar after the show. So we rode over there and they had a room upstairs where the bands were hanging out. They had security so noone else could go up there but the tour manager brought us up there.

When we first got up there I saw Jani playing pool with Erik Turner. I walked up and told him that I thought the show was great and offered to buy him a beer. He literally just stood there staring at the distance like "Why is this dude even talking to me". That shit pissed me off. Erik Turner told me to ignore him because he was an asshole.

So later, after many drinks, I signed my name on a napkin and slammed it down on the table where he and John West were sitting with a couple of groupie's - singing gospel tunes - and told him "Here is my autograph so you can remember you wouldn't be here without people like me." I was drunk... lol. I am surprised I didn't start a fight with him because that is how I was back then. I was surprised that they didn't kick me out after that.

The coolest part about that night was that a bunch of them went downstairs and were jamming with the cover band that was playing that night. Very cool night.

Good vid!!! At first Lynch seemed like a bit of a dick criticizing Brodericks thumb pick. He came around though and became very genuine when he admitted to feeling uncomfortable, and always playing catchup during the shred fest of the 80's.
Broderick just seemed like a player meeting one of his early influences.

During the little bit of improv I thought Lynch did a better job of staying in the pocket...

Cool story!

I knew John (Jani) from his days with Dorian Gray. He was taking vocal lessons from a guy (Ron Feldman) who frequented Fern Park Station. I remember Ron telling me; "John is going to sing with the band tonight!" He sang Bowie's "Suffragette City". John was a cool guy back then, and was an excellent drummer! I drank just as heavily as John in those days, and it's sad that he couldn't bring himself to getting the help he needed. The last time I talked to John was at Fern Park Station doing 'lines' with JBJ and two titty dancers from Club Juana.

No argument there... John was an infinitely better drummer than he ever was a singer. Warrant's brand of music was typical L.A. hair band ad nauseam.

Broderick is definitely more of a technical player and Lynch plays from the soul. A teacher once told me that once a guitarist progresses in his abilities, technique gives way to feel.
