Is there any safe way to do this??? How about some rust spots on a chassis?

EDIT: I'm referring to the top of the trannie...

Trannie- I personally wouldn't touch.

Chassis, some fine "very fine" steel wool has worked for me in the past! Just make sure you don't get any pieces of steel wool inside the chassis, which can cause all kinds of issues!!

Rust can be a good thing, it can cut down eddy currents. Looks like crap though.

If it's the bells (covers), you could try removing them, and having them sandblasted, then painted or powdercoated.

If it's the plates, best left alone...(or replace the tranny)

I imagine the steel wool particles would cause more of a rust problem....

I knew just the guy to ask for this. My Dad's an Electrical Engineer

I asked about the steel wool. He wasn't too keen on it. He has actually cleaned a transformer with a lightly damp SOS pad. Just wet it, ring it out well and give the transformer a scrub. Worked for him. He said it was a clean way to do it, as where steel wool wasn't. And he jokingly said "make sure it's off". ;)

If this doesn't work, I've recently discovered a wonderful product. I had to restore a severly corroded Tele. I ended up using saw blade cleaner on the control plate and the rusted case latches. It worked wonders! Just a thought if the SOS pad doesn't work.

Good luck!
