Cleans on a Naylor Duel and Friedman Naked

I was wondering if anybody had any experience with the clean channel on the Naylor and the Friedman Naked. I have a Naylor Duel 60 that I absolutely love. The clean channel leaves a lot to be desired. I was wondering if the Naked clean channel was much better. The Naylor clean always sounds better with a pedal on front it. Tightens things up. Appreciate any info.

I’ve had quite a few Friedman’s and the only clean I would say comes close to the Duel 60 (great amp) would be the Dirty Shirley/Twin Sister. Never tried the Buxom Betty tho. The Naked was an early Friedman, not many bought that amp for the clean channel

Appreciate the feedback. Yeah I didn’t buy the Naylor for the clean channel. It’s pretty meh. Since the Naked and Duel are kissing cousins, I wondered if the clean channel on the Naked was improved. It seems to have the same amount of controls. Only a clean volume? I believe stock, the Duel only has Volume for the clean channel? Mine has the density rotary and bright switch for it as well. It makes it a little bit more manageable, but it doesn’t sound particularly good when messing with those.

I’ve also heard the Budda SuperDrive is another cousin to the Duel 60 and I did not find that to be true at all 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, since I’ve never had a Naked sorry I’m no help at all

I've had the Naked, and I have a Duel 100. They're the same thing. It's the simple clean Dave Friedman designed for Kyle Kurtz when Kyle owned Naylor.
Awesome. Exactly what I was hoping to hear. Pulled out some different guitars and messed with the Density and Bite in new positions. Sounded better. Appreciate it Dale!

I have Duel 60 and my issue with clean channel was almost impossible to get both channels equally volume wise. (no Density, only Bite). The circuit placement of clean channel volume before Master doesn't help at all and my solution was some light tweaks by my tech to lower clean channel signal and now it works great. Absolutely no need for EQing, just plug-in great guitar without high output pickups.

Can you elaborate? What would I tell my tech to do? You’re absolutely right. The channels don’t balance right.

I have owned both. (I've actually owned 2 SD's, a OG Michigan and a newer one. I've owned 3 Friedman Nakeds, a 2012 100w, a 2018 Naked+, and my current one, an '83 2204 with a Naked mod -- the best sounding one.) The 2012 and 2018 Nakeds had clean channels. IMO, they're nothing special. About on par with the clean channel on the SD60, perhaps a bit brighter. FWIW, Billy Howerdel never uses the simple clean on his OG Naked; he just rolls back the volume on his neck pickup, with a treble bleed, and then uses the pickup selector on his LP as a clean/dirt.

Appreciate you chiming in. I dig your YouTube channel. You definitely know what you’re talking about after owning all those variants. Interesting to hear that the 2204 Naked is your favorite. My Duel 60 is factory stock with EL34s. I haven’t had the chance to crank a SD60 with 5881s but a buddy who has played many Naylors said he liked mine best. My tech also had quite a few tube variants to try out with my amp. The EHX EL34s were the clear winner. Surely the Marshall transformers are contributing but there must also be something to the EL34s. Yeah check out that time stamp I posted above. This video is where my original post originated from. I’ll be asking Billy on Tone Talk this Friday was compressor(s) he was referring to.

This is a pretty good representation (not my video). I didn’t have a duel but I had an original sd60 Friedman modded with a simple clean which I believe is where the duel evolved from. This would be a fair example of how the clean on mine sounded.

That said I always A/B’d with a matchless or fender pro and never used the clean on my Naylor.
