Amp ho
The clip Redplated posted inspired me to work on my plexi tones. Borrowed this 50 watter that a friend built. Pretty high quality build- Merren, Heyboer iron.

Changed my approach on dialing this in. Turned the boost on (BB Preamp), and then dialed the amp in to suit the sound. Results are better than I’ve gotten in the past for sure.

Put it next to one of my 2204’s for reference.

sweet mother of sacramento that’s a dastardly A/B crunch! :m17:

love that perfect bleeding edge of oily bronchial oink and musical string sizzle.

any further down the gain hole you risk collapsing into 1-D monotone weedwacker tv white noise 10 string djentland with adolph jackhammer on drums and this guy on vocals:

Both sound really good, and close to each other...In the room, is the plexi a little clearer sounding? That was my exp with an 83 2203 vs my 72. But like your comparison, the JCM did have more saturation to it since you're starting off with a gainy amp to begin with. The 72 was like a Wizard in that its a clear gain; which takes some getting used to vs a more saturated 2203 tone.
Depending on the pedal you use, the output knob can be used as a 'master vol' while you push up the amps volume more to get the power tubes saturated...my Ultimate Drive acts like that for lower vol playing. Sounds best at noon but I'm peeling the paint off the walls lol.

I liked the fullness of the notes on the boosted plexi more for solos but didn’t favor a top end squish on the rhythm from it. The JCM800 had a more low mid thing going on that sounded more beefy and better for rhythm but I didn’t prefer the solo tone of it as it seemed to thin out a bit.

That JCM800 STP tone is the shit right there though. Id be proud of that - it’s absolutely perfect IMO.

Both sound amazing and I’m really nit picking here.

Killer playing too.

Damn man, that’s a whole lot of amazing Marshall tones in there.

Both sound great. The plexi has a much stronger midrange presence. The 800 is more evenly balanced in the EQ and sounds scooped compared to the plexi. But in a good way. It also makes the 800’s bottom end sound more pronounced. I prefer the 800 here but both are fantastic.

Yea I'd say the Plex is more clear- mostly due to the gnarly midrange making notes poke out more. The downside to all that midrange is significantly less low end and a sort of ratty, squirrely high end

Nail on the head as always man.

Agree 100% - single note playing is more satisfying on the Plexi, rhythm is significantly more monstrous on the 800.

Fantastic job. I’m envious of your ability to capture tones so well. Both sound really great and either one would get the job done. Like the others I prefer the 2204 but only slightly.

Both are great!
Different but killer?
Plexi a little more vintage and the 800 more aggressive.
Thanks for posting these.

STP riff ??

Both sounded excellent, you get great tones. To me it depended on what you were playing. I agree with the above about the 800 for rhythms and plexi for leads if I had to choose. But even then it depended on what you were playing.

I obviously need a BB Preamp!

Great tones man. Maybe a bit more bottom end if you jumpered channels on the 4-Holer?

Kinda like if Fait Yanagi went eat too much Leonards malasadas and kimchi den washed it down with rotten pass-o-guava and got on the city bus bound for Waianae wearing only her braddahs skid marked bibbidies on a hot July day.
