Looking at the 2012 standard. Anyone have one and do you think they're worth the $$. Also will I need to re-PUP

theres a reason you see everybody and their mother with a lp .. they are awesome,,,.get one a bit older though...

The tops on the 2012 Standard Plus are some of the best I've seen.

I have read alot of good things about the 2012 Standard. No pickup change needed IMHO.

Have you ever had an LP before? I usually buy used but have bought 2 LP's brand new. They just tend to stick around with me.

I think the pickup change depends on the style you seek. I'm sure the stock is solid for many genres...as for the axe, try before you buy (if possible). Otherwise, make sure you get a sweet deal in case the guitar does not speak to you and you need to flip; I've played LPs that were awesome and LPs that totally turned me off.

Yea I had a studio LP like 25 years ago sounded okay after a pup change. Just wondering if the 2012 standard is a winner
as far as out of the box. I don't want to drop 3k on a lark. I need some feedback.

I would get an older one, mid 90's or back a bit further. I like them used any way. Feel better to play, and no worries about it getting any bumps or bruises.

Just pulled the trig on a cherry S/B for 3K. I'm kind of freaking out but I guess if you want a LP you have to put up the $$.

Ballsy. ;)

Awesome guitars - everyone needs a couple! ;)

Pickup changes are not a necessity with these. Give it some time before you go down that road. I'd leave it personally.

Am I missing something? Was it a plus or did the sunburst run it up to 3k . from what I've seen all the gibsons are on sale almost everywhere .
BTW I disagree on the pup swap . I love lesters but IMHO gibson pups suck . My 2 favorite pups of all time are the WCR darkburst and the BK rebel yell . Just my $.02

What he said. Even if you are 100% a strat guy you need one good Paul in your arsenal.

Congrats! Cost aside, I don't think there's anything to freak out about. In several decades of test driving LPs, I haven't come across too many that I'd consider unplayable or unfixable. QC issues? Heck yeah, but to me, if it doesn't have a neck issue or doesn't sound like a dead piece of wood, it's a contender. Most of what I've seen are parts that need to be replaced (nut) or setup tweaks. Relatively easy fixes.

I currently own two 2000 models; a run of the mill Standard (05) and a custom shop Custom (09). I don't care if they're from a supposedly good or bad year / decade / whatever...I dig them and they're great sounding and playing guitars.

The new Standards have some pretty cool updates if I remember correctly. Hope you enjoy it!

There's nothing like a good Les Paul. Mine's an '89 Standard. Refitted with 6100 Jumbo frets and a Suhr Aldrich in the bridge and a SD'59 in the neck.

Picked up my first LP Standard about a month ago. 2009 Goldtop. Burstbucker Pro's are OK but I know I could do better. Just waiting on my pots to arrive to swap the entire guts out of it. Love the guitar and can't stop playing it though. When you find the one, you just know. In the first 15 seconds I knew I was leaving with that guitar.

Tried a few Traditional Pro's in the store. Didn't care for them at all. Felt cheap to me. Grabbed a couple of Standards and they were in a different league. Definitely worth the extra cash IMO.

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to dig the L/P. Not going to prethink the outcome in a negative light, i.e., pups, frets, neck. As the earlier poster mentioned--yea the cherryburst cost more, but thats what I wanted. I'm not going to go half assed to save a few bucks on the purchase of a lifetime.

I've got a 2012 LP Standard that I got in a trade deal. Although I did swap out the pups for the Suhr Aldrich neck/bridge. Not a fan of the burstbuckers.
One interesting feature is the neutrik style locking input jack- not sure if that's standard on the 2012's. Great guitar but my '79 Standard is still my #1.

I've got a lot of guitars and have had the pleasure of playing many more...

Every time I grab a Lester? It feels like home

Nothing beats a good les Paul. I love em , customs, juniors, deluxes, classics, etc. stock pickup should be good for an all around pickup but if you are playing heavy music with vintage amps you may need a hotter pickup to help push amp. If you are buying new, you would probably be better off getting a used historic or and older lp. Either way though you should be happy, good Luck!!!

Don't rule out the cheapos.......as long as you try them out first. I recently got a Studio Nitrous model that plays and sounds better than my 2010 Traditional (with boutique pups) and 1995 Classic. So much so that I sold both of those and pocketed about $2500 :D
