Considering switching to Super Reverb and sea of pedals...

Keep looking at different amps and getting tired of the modded marshall thing, mainly the DSL50 + SD1 just isn't doing it for me lately. Thinking about going to back to where I started, good clean amp and nice selection of pedals. Adam's SD18 combo has been haunting my dreams for a while now, and I have always had mad lust for a Super Reverb...

Thoughts?

If you know that it will work for you then I say do it but finding the right pedals can also be a HUGE PITA. It's like anything else, you have got to STICK TO a plan and then do it.

I also have to say, why cant you use the clean channel on your DSL and hit that with pedals?

Yeah I could do that, right now I'm boosting the crunch channel and it sounds good, cuts thru nicely with the band... Just not digging it lately and I'm wondering if it's the amp or the SD1 that I'm not getting along with. Found a bad monkey on my bench this morning and will give that a whirl this weekend with the DSL and see how it goes. But you are absolutely right, probably setting myself up for a bigger nightmare trying to find the right pedals again.

I dont think the DSL clean took gainier pedals very well. Too scooped or something. U got a tubescreamer to try? I always thought those were more open and organic than the boss. The little soundtank is my favorite. If u were close id give u a pile of pedals to try.. Lol!

Sounds like a great plan.
For the smaller stages I'm using a 50w single channel head, 2x12, and pedals.

Are you looking at the black face RI?

When I go into the rehearsal studio I use a Stock DSL 100 watter with everything set at Noon and I hit it with a modded TS808 and a bit of delay in the loop and much to my surprise it sounds insanely good.
Ive since dropped the tube screamer and delay and I used the RP1000 for the Boost pedal and delay and I still use the DSL with the same setting.....and it sounds insanely good (much to my surpise lol)
I have followed your posts for a while now and as an outsider looking in, and as your friend, DROP THE DSL. It's not doing it for you.
Sell that amp and start over but try before you buy if you can.
That's my advice and I'm sticking to it!

Go to GC with your guitar. Grab some pedals and pipe them through a Fender and see what you come up with!

Buy a future Gainfreak surprise amp fag.

BTW LOVE my new Hamer neck pup, sounds killer!

That is what I am doing with my '69 Fender Bandmaster Reverb, just running it clean and using pedals. What I found that is that as the gain of the dirt pedals go up, the less and less I like. There are a lot of great low gain dirt pedals, a good number of solid medium gain pedals, and very few high gain pedals that I like.

I have been thinking of getting a tube based pedal when I have some extra money. I am considering the Kingsley Jester, Blackstar HT-dual, or Surprise sounds Rock Block.

What flavor of distortion are you looking for? Wampler has put out some killer pedals lately in Plexi/Brown and SLO flavors...definitely worth a look if you're heading in that direction.

I think it's pretty easy to get good lead sounds out of a clean amp and pedals and some low gain blues crunch sounds for rhythm. But I've always found it hard to get a good rhythm sound that's any gainier than that with pedals that I like.

Gainfreak Grab Bag amp? Hmmm....  :D

Glad your diggin' the neck pup bro

As far what kinda dirty tone am I after? Something warmer than I have now that will cover a lot of ground, ie cover band duty. I really just want to find an amp I finally happy with, I have been making due for so long it's killing me. Not sure what that amp is though to tell you the truth.

I will get a good break from shows in another month or so, woohoo holiday break, then I guess it will be sell the Fortin DSL time and start looking for something else. Luckily I have a Peavey XXX head that I can use for a while, it's a great amp, but I have a love hate relationship going on with it for the last few years   .

Mesa Electra Dyne and some pedals. For a reference, IMHO, the Electra Dyne with a BB Preamp SMOKED a Diezel Einstein. I also had the Bogner Shiva 20th and sold it because i liked the Dyne better. I'm really suprised by this Mesa.

Are you close to Voodoo Amps? Maybe that global control in the DSL would be the ticket to warmer and more versatile tone.
Never mind, looks like that won't go in a dsl

Nope, about 400 miles north of you near Sacramento.

Haha, I always think you're on the east coast, I dont know why!!

The best thing about pedals is they are cheap and easy to switch around when you grow tired of them....

Guitar players are a strange bunch .... never really happy with any of their gear for long periods of time. I have seen a few people that play other instruments that are this way. But the bulk have been guitar players.
