Might be a "secret", might not...
The ADA MP-1 preamps had a trim pot inside that would up the gain. No need to use a boost pedal, It was all right there with a simple tweak of the pot.
Alot of units over the years of getting knocked around and used heavily would cause the pot to go out of adjustment, thus causing some MP-1's to sound awesome and some not so hot.

That’s why we’d put a spot of paint on the trim pots.
Biggest problem with ADA was their front panels failing.
I seem to remember their pitch-shifter sucked tone horribly.

I see MP-1's pop up now and then online (musicians fiend, etc.) I'd like to get another one someday but something always says to me "Don't do it".

I think you are going a bit far with the power tubes conspiracy : P , unless you were talking about preamp tubes as well?

The JJ KT77 are just fine nowadays I beleive. for 12ax7, tungsol eh, chinese and jjs all have their flavor for different purposes and are ok imo.

What speaker are you using? If you are on chinese V30, you are doomed to play with a mid spike that you cant remove.

I play/prefer Eminence v12/swap thang/fryette speakers in Vader cabs, pretty dark to begin with.

I think talking specific settigns is a bit futile but my mpresence is always high, but i am just looking for a sweet spot where the presence act as a low pass filter, so that I can have maximum highs crunching without the piercing frequency of whatever it is at the cutoff from the presence pot.

I played my krank at smoething like 10/10/10 bass mid high and it was a monster tone! I guess the sweep knob was cutting lot of bass or soemthing.

I recommend the Empress ParaEQ BASS to put in the loop, yes the bass one, I just prefer the frequency range but you can get the one for guitar as well. Full 9 settings parametric eq with low/high pass filter with deep low/deep high zone boost + clean boost! best pedal ever

KT77 are a nasty valve. All current production 12ax7 valves are very shitty hi-mid cunts.
 
I agee that pick choice matters more than tube choice

Marshall is the best at making amps that almost sound good
