So, I have a beautiful 1984 Marshall 2204, vertical inputs, Drakes, all original, super clean condition, etc. etc. Yeah, basically the 2204 that everybody wants.

I always told myself that I would never sell it. You know, it's a classic. Problem is, I haven't used it live in the past 17 years, as the bands I have played in always require more variety of tones.

I have been using my Mesa T-Verb for years now as my live amp, along with a few pedals. Love the rig, but it's starting to feel a little stale.

I am starting to think about dumping the 2204 in order to fund the purchase of a new, more versatile head to replace the T-Verb with - in which case the T-Verb will just become my back up head at gigs.

Hence the conundrum: Even though I know the 2204 will hold its value and more likely than not appreciate in value over the coming years, do I sell it to pick up something made more recently that I'll actually use on a consistent basis?

You have the facts. Discuss.

Thanks, all.

Keep it. Everyone should own a Marshall... Just throw an OD pedal in front of it and play it from time to time.

Keep it and have it modded.

Although that is an attractive option, it ain't gonna happen. This thing is too clean - she deserves to stay stock (whether it's me or someone else that gets to enjoy it)........

If you don't use it sell it  I wouldn't keep it around just for nostalgia, especially if you want to get something else that you could use to freshen your sound back up.

If funds and space aren't an issue, and it sounds killer,I'd keep it,or go and bother your neighbor Mr Fortin

I've been in this position before... The things you own, end up owning you. If you're not using it, if it's not offering any inspiration, if it's not making you a better player - ditch it. If it's none of the above, it's just 'stuff', and 'stuff' is useless - it holds us down, collects dust, and simply wastes our funds.

Sorry to be so black and white, but seriously, there's no emotional content when it comes to business. If it's not being used, it's an expense or a red asset. See ya!!

Peace,
V.

Damn, V! I need to apply your approach to my parenting skills! :hys:

There is a lot of truth there though, and the truth hurts!

I would put the JCM800 in a closet for a while and pretend like you sold it. See if you miss it or would play it in that time. If you don't notice its gone, than its time to move it on. Kind of the trial separation idea.

I will say that now is about the worse time to try to sell an amp though. The amp market is tough, so you might not get what you want for it.

:hys: :hys: :hys: Aw shit man, I got two little screamers myself - I think I'd be in jail if I applied my business sense to family. It just wouldn't go over well - hell, I'm the guy in line at the kids' store asking "so I ordered a cage for my toddler a while ago...did it come in?" to which the lady looked horrified and said "SIR!!! It's not a CAGE - IT'S A PLAY DEN!!!!" to which I replied "whatever, the same company makes it for dogs, with the same model number on the product itself, and they call it a 'play cage' - so whatever makes ya happy. And while you're at it, do you sell lockable lids for cribs". Horrified again, I stopped her and said "Ah, right, wait a second - I believe they're referred to as "safety canopies", but in my book, it's still a f*ckin' lid".

Yep. So far the authorities have left me alone. My wife thinks it's only a matter of time.

Ditch the Marshall. Opportunity cost. Use the funds elsewhere and more beneficially. Unless you own a studio and require a plethora of sounds to be available to your clients, cut the cord.

Respectfully,
V.

I pretty much already did this. As mentioned, I haven't played through it at a gig for 17 years and it's probably seen less than 20 hours of noodling time over the same period! The only thing I'd miss is that nice gold faceplate and script logo smiling at me every time I pulled it outta storage!!!

Take some photos of it, you know, for sentimentality...you holding it, hugging it, rockin' it with your fave ax, looking lovingly at it...

Then sell it.

OK, I think I seriously just shat my pants. That is the funniest thing I've read on here in a long time! :hys:
