we used to do the same thing and instead of flat on the floor - use blankets on a concrete basement floor.

never tried playing one like that though, but a cool trick for most practice amplifiers is to play with the amplifier facing the floor and you can crank it up a little more that way, or use it to lower the volume :)

I actually run my cabs so they're facing away from me, kinda like if i was standing behind the cab. That way i hear the smoother tone and i don't get hit in the face with the frequencies firing outta the front of the cab.

For me it's so much more fun to play when i run the cabs that way. I really hate the tone of being right infront of a 4x12, when you're facing the cab and getting blasted.

Could just cover the cab with a blanket and call it a Bogner

I was always told that was bad for the cabinet...

I have done all my gigs like this for years .... it is just part of my sound.

I would think the floor not having any give like air may do damage ? Since the force needs to go someplace. It is going back into the cab. If this is bad or not would just be a guess from me.

Well the cab is on carpet and I tend to prefer venting one isde or the cab to increase the gass response. I have never heard of any damage to putting a cabinet face down...although I am sure it is possible if you create an air tight seal...(which I don't have) ;)

That makes sense to me.

A typical 4x12 will force air out around the front baffle, the handles, jack, and back.

So how do you mic your rig then

I just tried this and Dave is right. It sounds so good in fact that I cut a hole in my dining room ceiling up into my studio so I can mic the cab this way. I am trying to integrate my SM-57 and cord into the chandelier above the dining room table and I think it is going to work out so my wife won't even see the mic up there.

I never mic. I just bring more cabs and turn up.

I was just joking ..... a lot of stages I have been on would not have enough room to do this.

OP you should make a video of this amazing discovery.

as a kid after I got my first marshall (jcm800 2203) I would just put the cabinet face down on the mattress in my room and use that as my practice amp ha ha.
