Doctor is a rather broad term....I mean I can clean cuts and put pokeymon band-aids on and such as good as any "doctor"

Well then there is application, it matters little to me whether the player has any theory knowledge if it resonates with me. That said the majority of Rocj guys I cannot listen to. Nor can I hang with their concept of time or harmony. I mean this is Western music we wrote the book on this shit, yet my option are to listen to the same tired note sequences over the same tired progressions? No thanks...anhd when it comes to rhythm foget about it, if it isn't 4/4 or some contrived wanna be hip odd meter there isn't any Western music that is advanced beyond baby steps. Indian music, African music, Brazillian music all of this slays Western shit.shreder75":209dx7yp said:degenaro":209dx7yp said:One has zero to do with the other. Especially for Rock guys. But knowing the note names and intervals is NOT knowing theory, it's a start.shreder75":209dx7yp said:BUT to take this one step further....there's people who know theory for days and yet can't seem to pick out one fucking good note on the whole goddamn guitar....lol
give me someone with a working knowlege of the guitar with a good ear who can improvise something tasty and interesting over a guy who knows how to voice every chord in the book and knows the inner workings of every scale created yet can't play anything palatable any day of the week =)
Also chord voicings and how a scale is build is merely a start. Wanna have a laugh have a guitarist explain modes...99 out of 100 will tell you something that makes perfect sense to them but is useless and wrong. This is where ideas like if you know theory you can't find a good note come from. the theory of harmony is where shit is at. When you know how a progression functions then the "good" notes are what you pick by choice, not chance. As for the ear...doh...but again there are too many guys that really have shit for ears, couldn't tell you a F# chord without comparing the notes on fretboard, couldn't tell a minor from a major, etc...
Bottom line,if you hav to ask what key is this in when you hear something guitar in hand you need an ear tune up...
theory is a broad term...
in any event, I put more stock in knowing basics and having a good and creative ear than anything else...in the end, style matters more to me...which is why I'll listen to someone like Adrian Smith or (old) Lynch or someone along those lines rather than people with encyclopedic knowledge like Satch or Vai cause I can't stand their styles..
of course being able to do both is the best situation
in my second band I had a classically trained pianist on keyboards..we were playing top 40 bullshit...but if it wasn't written in front of her or she couldn't find the sheet music? Forget about it..not to mention if we asked her to improvise....no way that was happening..can't tell you how many songs we had to scrap because of it..and here's me...I can't sight read, I know basic theory and whatnot and I would learn all the songs by ear and could improv over just about any one of them if I had to fill in a gap....

So, the willingness for Rock guys to stay super stagnant because if it isn't consonant or they haven' gotten used to it it's no good doesn't work fo me. Shit, a couple hundred years ago using a dominant 7 chord would get the Spanish inquisition on your ass.
As for guys that read and can't hear...as I said, the ear is where it's at. The rest is merely a bunch of guides to have this shit mak some sense.
Thats why I was referring to the Satriani law suit thread...where I think it was Cloud 9 gave this explanation why th 2 progressions weren't related at all when in reality in terms of function they were identical.Digital Jams":23s3lenx said:Doctor is a rather broad term....I mean I can clean cuts and put pokeymon band-aids on and such as good as any "doctor"
right...but the problem isn't with theory bu rather it's fucked up application. Or just a matter of not relating to it because of a difference in taste. First time I heard Coltrane I thought some one raped my earhole. Now I listen to him and it's totally resonating.shreder75":2lul8q3m said:degenaro":2lul8q3m said:Well then there is application, it matters little to me whether the player has any theory knowledge if it resonates with me. On the flip side when I listen to some of the guys I grew up on I shut it off and prefer to simply remember them as amazing as oppossed to be faced with the reality that my taste changed enough that I just don't dig it any more.

he's full of shit....he calls out the notes he's playing generally in any given position and he talks about 'replacing the major third here with the minor instead'....so yeah, he knows theory....why he would say otherwise? who knows...lol..
Lynch is all about minor but theory wise he aint no Vai or Gambale![]()
