Couple of questions regarding Bogner Shiva EL34 re-tube/bias

I recently picked up an EL34 Bogner Shiva which I absolutely love. I had a peek inside and noticed that the tech that went over the amp before I bought it put JJ EL34s in the amp. No issue really, I have read that they should be ok, but I also keep reading that Bogner recommends Winged Cs so I'm tempted to just get a pair and see what the differences is.

First of, is this the tube he's talking about? - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EL34-SVETL...item3caba61a53 or is it this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/3908...f11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0

Secondly, I take it once the chassis comes out, I'll be able to locate the bias points and bias control dial fairly easily? Does anybody have a picture? I have biased an amp before - Marshall JVM - but I knew where I was looking!

Finally, what would I notice going from JJs to Winged Cs, tonally? I know it's subjective but generally?

Thanks in advance

First off, for years Bogners came with ARS-labeled JJ E34L. Secondly, the SED C is no longer in production. So any you find are either NOS (so very expensive) or factory second old stock. So buyer beware.

But in my experience, in most amps SED C are a little looser in the lows a little more "greasy" sounding with a hint of compression and more crunchy in the mids. Whereas the JJ E34L (not the EL34) is tighter in the low end and more pronounced in the mids for a slightly firmer sound. A little more rumble. But honestly the differences are very small.

You could also try the KT77—either JJ or Gold Lion. They are a good substitute for EL34 and sound good too.

I've never biased a Shiva though, so can't help ya there.

Thanks man.

I think the second link I posted were actual SEDs?

Yes, the second link is the SED Winged C you seek.

Why does Bogner state the Shiva must use SEDs if they originally came with JJ E34Ls? I'm looking for alternative options as I bought 3 separate matching quads of SEDs and only one quad will bias into the 31 range. If the JJE34Ls will stand up the. I'll look there.

I don't know why they say they must use SEDs. That's ridiculous. SEDs are no longer made so at some point they'll all be gone. What does Bogner expect people to do then, throw they amps in the trash?

I've since read elsewhere Ruby BHT are now recommended by Bogner. What is everyone else running?

SED, Ruby BHT, JJ E34L, JJ KT77, Gold Lion KT77. They should all do fine with high plate voltages.

To run kt77's in a Bogner Shiva, do you have to do any modifications?

You have to get it blessed by a Trapist Monk.

Nah, KT77 are a drop in replacement for EL34. But I'd double check with Bogner first. Who knows, maybe there's some surprise something in the Shiva that doesn't like KT77.
