How do you "properly" check out a song other than by listening to it? This is a hot mess IMO. I like technical metal bands, and crazy music but there has to be something to latch on to. This is just a random mess.

Sounds pretty random and not musical. Though I thought the same about Gorgut's Obscura album when I first heard it, which now I think is great. I'm going to give one of their albums a listen.

what is there to like about this band?

granted all of these genre's are way out in left field - the drummer hits weak, all of their songs have no structure, there is so much unusable gain on each of the 3 worthless lead guitarists that you cant hear any notes anyway, the playing is strictly sporadic, the vocalist has the stamina of a farting mouse, and to top it off people like you actually like it?

Ok, I checked out more of their stuff, and I have to go with my original opinion...They suck balls! Great if some people like them, I don't and I'll tell you why.

I understand the whole concept of modern metal and "pushing it" as far as it can go, but when you try to force so many elements together in one song, no matter how talented/technical and creative the parts may be, they are just jumbled together in a big mess of shit soup. Anyone can play a bunch of random scales and fast blast beats in different time sigs and layer tons of parts, etc... but NOT everyone can write a good metal groove, or make a simple yet effective song/riff.

Shit, this Sputum project I did as a joke/tribute to death metal is better IMO and we were just f'n around.

I am not pushing the band on anyone. I was saying don't judge the band off one youtube clip. There are albums that are awesome from the get go and albums that take time to appreciate. this band is the latter.

It's annoying to see guys on forums who talk highly about Dokken, Megadeath, whatever. but throw a band in here like Gorguts, The Chasm, Pestilence, whatever and you guys go off calling it complete shit and act like you understand what their doing but you call the bands core. There is nothing core, or core influnced in Portal or the bands I mentioned.

and no glassjaw, this band isn't going for a "groove" like old school death metal bands (what I mainly listen to along with Jazz) but more of an atmosphere. I thank you for checking them out more (granted, going from SYL to Portal is a pretty big step) and thank you for the links I'll check em out.

Exactly, i didnt knock the guy for his opinion but Im not surprised by his reaction even if it was off base and nothing more than a knee jerk response.. I liked the Airheads farting on a snare reference. Like Adam Sandler said " I aint fartin on no snare drum"...
