Sorry if this has been covered already but couldn't find the thread. Anyway I recently briefly tried a new 101b and really liked the tone and I liked how it is sonically different from my hot-rodded Marshall amp. However I've read some comments saying the current 101b (post 2003) can be too compressed on the red channel. Is the red channel usable for rhythm work that's tight enough for like 80's rock/metal without having to really crank it? Thanks.

You asked earlier on about the blanket problem. I have a 20th XTC EL 34. I have no problems dialing out the blanket. So that is not an issue. You asked also about cutting through the mix. That is not a problem to me either. I have a Marshall YJM head too. The YJM is brighter and cuts like a knife. I think the following vids show the tonal difference (cutting ability) between the amps with regard to that quite well:
Bogner blue

Marshall YJM

I find the XTC to sound really fantastic at lower volumes- actually much better than the YJM or any other amp i owned before including the JVM. But you have to engage the FX loop. Big difference with or without!
I do not find the XTC too compressed on the red channel. I actually love the red channel. XTC is tight enough for 80`s rock/ metal at low levels. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions. I had amps before that did not cut. The XTC is not one of them.
Listen to 05:00-05:10 that is how the red channel sounds.

I do not find that too compressed.

Thanks for the input and great vids. However I don't know that the 101b red channel would be as tight as the 20th's red channel.

I like the earlier (pre '04) Red channel the best out of all of them - and I've owned '97 & '04 101b, 2012 20th 6L6 & 2011 20th EL34. But I hear the brand new 20th Anniversary models with the new caps sound really good. I found my old one to be a bit smeared on the Red channel - just a tad congested instead of that amazing Bogner definition. Otherwise the 6L6 20th is the best amp I've ever played. I really feel stupid selling it.

Ya I figured the pre '03 red channel would have been better as it was less compressed. So are you still using Bogners?

Hei Ron, i thought that i would dislike the Red channel due to that. But i found the red channel to be my favourite channel. Sings for days and actually and very surprisingly does not smear. Have the amp since last friday and after having owned a lot of amps before i do not have a honeymoon anymore (at least i think so). I have the XTC 20th El34 version and am very pleased with all 3 channels for what i play. But channel 1 and 3 exceeded my expectations.

I have a 101b and play in an 80's hard rock band. I've used my 101b through my Bogner 4x12 loaded with Celestion Greenbacks. It sounded great, no problems doing 80's Rock.

I think the RED channel on the EL34 20th is really good. You just have to get a little more volume going than on the 6L6 model to get it into the sweet zone.

i get great crunchy and tight rock/metal rhythm tones out of my 101b Red channel.

i use the Red channel post-2004 higher-gain setting, but i turn the Gain knob down pretty low. the post-2004 has a tighter tone to me than the pre-2004 lower-gain tone, even when the gain is at a similar amount; crunchier and tighter, for palm muting, not as loose. i run the Excursion on T.

it can't quite do modern djent levels of tightness for me, but it's plenty tight for 80s metal. Dr Feelgood or Back for the Attack FTW.

Do you use the red channel, blue channel, or both for 80's hard rock/metal rhythm? Thanks.
