Had one of the 1st Wizards shipped to me here in the states. First UPS gets me for Customs. I thought that was it... until a State audit now wants 6.5%.

Are they charging you a "use tax" on top of the customs/brokerage charges?

MN state tax 6.5 %.

Right, use tax is pretty much the same thing. If it wasn't purchased in MN you probably weren't charged MN state sales tax when you bought it. Since it's being used in MN they can charge you a use tax instead.

It doesn't make much sense to me in this case though. Why are they entitled to MN state tax on an item that can't even be purchased in MN?

They are entitled according to MN State law; evidently, and I owe them.

 I know how that feels and its not good, everytime I ship even used product to Ontario Canada Canada Customs charges 13% of the Canadian dollar value plus the brokerage and shipping is an expensive venture at times.

Yep, I experience this too... just a fact of buying out of the country. UPS brokers the package through customs, charges you a fee. Typically a state tax is applied at that point and UPS pays for the tax and then charges you.

Yeah, this is BS. Florida wants like 8% from me. Wizard needs to set up some type of U.S. based distributor that takes care of this problem.

So, if you order a new "Wizard" amp you have the pay the UPS shipping from Canada plus a brokerage fee and possibly more? Ouch

Yep, You will get a nice bill from UPS customs, and then another one from your State. Hey, the US is hurting. If you can afford a Wizard amp then surely you can afford to help out the State. Bullshit!

This can't be helped. We canadians have been dealing with this same type of thing since the beginning of time. UPS charges brokerage and in fact it's 3x as much coming into canada. You have to wonder why because it's the same amount of paperwork. .... al 1 sheet of it!! We get charged about $80 brokerage fee and about 14% in tax on anything worth a few hundred or more. I'm pretty sure brokerage from UPS in the USA is about $40. Whether Wizard has a distributor or not, someone has to pay the taxman. Canadians have been dealing with this for years. I'm surprised it took the Uncle Sam so long before he started taxing canadfian goods.

What about bringing the amps in to the states to say a storage spot then selling them based out of that location?
If infact the product is there in physical presence then the business address could also reflect this . Maybe. I guess the end result is if these amps are gonna carry the
pride markings of made in Canada, then they will be torched/touched up with the excess fees huh? SUX......................

The bottom line is they are made in Canada .

Actually ... no you are not and that statement ranks up there as far as dumb things said here on Rigtalk.

Oh Steve, I was just going off of what Hollywood said. I am not a prejudice person. Hey my daughter is an Irish, PeurtoRican Jew.
There are plenty of stereotypes about the French: they stink, women don't shave their underarms, they are rude, they hate Americans. Don't be fooled by these myths and urban legends. The truth is far more interesting. Here is some myth busting a la France with this list of top myths about France and the French people.
1. The French are Rude
This is easily the biggest stereotype about the French, and the most inaccurate. The French are among the friendliest and most helpful people I've ever encountered. There are cultural differences, however, that lead some to believe the French are rude. The key is to understand the culture and learn at least some basic French terms before you go. A very little effort towards education and understanding will go a huge distance to getting friendly treatment from French people.
2. French People Hate Americans
This generality is completely untrue. The French, in fact, do a much better job than Americans separating the idea of the American people from the American government. If anything, certainly since the French opposed the war in Iraq, one could more easily argue that Americans hate the French. There may be some French people who dislike Americans, but most are friendly and polite to their U.S. visitors. In fact, French teens and young adults adore and try to emulate Americans.
3. French People Stink
While I have encountered an occasional French person whose body odor would take your breath away, this is actually quite rare. Yes, the French aren't as obsessed as Americans are about daily showers and the scent of soap. Most practice perfectly acceptible hygeine, and it is unusual to encounter a person who stinks here.
5. All Women Go Topless at French Beaches
Sure, you will find some exposed chests on the French beaches. Many women, however, do remain covered. As a female sun-seeker, you won't feel out of place keeping a bikini top on at most beaches. Some beaches tend to be more topless than other beaches, but there is almost always a mix of women with tops on and tops off.
6. French Toilets are Disgusting
OK. I must confess. Sometimes this is true. Most of the public toilets in France are perfectly acceptible, however. Shopping malls, fine hotels and upscale restaurants feature the best digs. Cafe toilets are usually OK. You will, on occasion, still encounter the notorious hole-in-the-ground squatting toilet.

Last I heard France was in Europe , not in Canada so your remark was not only prejudice , it was totally out of context. Now lets keep in on amps or I'm going to have to start chopping here.

Tell the state that you returned it....
Damn Dave. Why'd you have to bump this thread? Can't you see I am putting my foot in my mouth again. Jeez Dude. Don't you know France is in Europe.

Customs suck I am thinking about sending an amp that way but the shipping would probably cost more than the work. Either way it won't be cheap can't do it at the moment, but would love to in the future.

I had to pay nearly $700 for mine to get into Australia, plus the extreme amount I'd already paid on shipping.

Totally worth it though :D
