Dave Grohl hits the nail on the head

It ties into what he was showing in Sound City. The current lack of artistic expression through true human interaction with the immediacy of all being right there. Having to keep at it until it's good and the intangibles that make something have a soul start emerging. You have a lot more people staying in their own little worlds, posting it on YT and wondering why they aren't rock starts yet.  ........like me

Just read this tonite.....
but for sure.....so true.

I play every weekend. We suck....but who cares?
Having fun and we blow out alot of original crap that we never put out on clips. ;)

Its like living my high school rock star dream 'for real' and it makes me smile and laugh every weekend.
So I guess I am winning right?
My kids in Highschool.....and they came out and watched us jam. Said it was really good. :)
Its music......and I love to keep it alive.

You win Dan.

And no obsessing over gear, no arguing over 10's or 9's sound better!

Just rock the fuck out!

It's different roads right? On one hand you get the pop/rock singers going on Idol or the Voice for instant recognition and a contract as the prize. On the other hand you have the ultimate environment for Minor Threat/Ian MacKaye style DIY-ing with the tech available now. It can be done both ways. Grohl is right for the most part in that what he's saying is you can be bad and still get big through effort, and even if you don't get big you still rock out in your garage. The issue is this generation is always looking for the shortcut, instant gratification. None of those voice singers went on tour to shitty clubs for 5 years before getting on the show.

Is there a way it can be made official that he is the coolest guy on the planet? I know everyone knows that, but there isnt anything that officially states that.

I like what Dave Grohl is saying but my experience with Nirvana was not a good one.In the early 90's I was in a band called Judgment. We were a progressive metal band similar to Queensryche, Dream Theater, and Fates Warning. All those bands at that time were enjoying a lot of success.
My band received major label interest from BMG USA.They had A&R guys come up to Toronto to watch us play, and they were telling us it was just a matter of time before they sign us.It was a very exciting time for us especially since we were from Canada. Some month's past by and they contacted us, telling us they wanted us to write some songs more in the vein of Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. This subsequently led to the break up of the band and the rest is history.Whether it was bands that were getting signed at the time ,or bands that were just playing in bars ,it was Nirvana's music that led to the dumbing down of a lot of music at that time.

Agree. Then again, I'd take another grunge movement over what's happening in music today.
Any fkn day, 100% agreed :2thumbsup:

Fuck that!!...Folks make such a big deal about that "movement", but it sucked and was an overstated blip that only lasted a few years before it turned into an even shittier version of itself....From what I'm seeing day to day there's a lot more interest in hard rock and metal music..., and I'm super stoked about it!!!!

Couldn't agree more...

Only problem is "doing it Grohl's way" no longer sells airtime marketing hype, it doesn't generate bottom line profits to the networks, it's not corporately conducive. And furthermore, kids today are so umbilically tied to their fuckin' iPhones and internet and NetFlix and TV and everything else, jamming out shit in a garage is too much work. They'd prefer to get highscores on Guitar Hero than actually rock the fuck out.
Yep. The 'music business' as it existed in the 70s and 80s is dead. And the fans killed it.

I think in many respects, technology killed it too. Just the whole concept of youtube and mp3 and streaming audio and the mess of it. Before, you needed to own the record to make a cassette tape of it - cassette was never as good as the real thing. Now you can bang mp3's back and forth till the cows come home. No one buys tickets for concerts because someone said "their last show sucked" on some forum, or crappy iPhone footage "sounds shitty" at the stadium, so screw it. Plus to go to a concert I may have to step away from Facebook...

There's an overwhelming sense of complacency in today's masses - specifically the younger masses. They're all fkd up with being "plugged in" and not capable of breaking free of the confines. They prefer to watch or compose Vines videos for YT popularity and hits, than to grab a beat to shit MIJ telecaster with a crappy amp cranked to "10" screaming about the injustices of the government, and the invisible hand of police oppression. No. They prefer to chalk up high scores on Guitar Hero. Drums are too noisy. Parents are too medicated. Life is too busy. Everything's too expensive. Nothing is important.

Nothing is important. This strikes a chord with me. Cuz I bet if I asked almost every one of the peeps I knew today what was important to them, they'd look at the ground, their shoe, their watch, the sky....until they realized "oh ya, right, I should probably say my children, or my family, or health and well being, or the overall welfare of humanity at large" blah blah blah. But this isn't the real answer. The real answer is they don't fuckin' know. Most of 'em don't anyway. They fap to porn on the net, polish their expensive cars, worry about the next material consumer item purchase, what they'll look like at the lounge this Friday night, their bank account, their insurance, their "stuff".

Fuck it. Rock and roll's about rebellion - not conformity and record sales.

/rant over.

Whatever......If a band as talented as Guns n Roses were playing clubs in LA right now with the kick ass songs that they were playing then, they would still get big. If you can write all those iconic tunes & riffs from Appetite for your first record, with many of those songs already in your setlist even before you sit down to even write the record, you would make it big. Same with Van Halen....

Of course the $ from record sales wouldn't be the same because of the internet, but the buzz & access to the world that the internet provides is something bands would have killed for in the past. Touring/merchandising & creative record sales today would still make bands with that level of talent some serious $.

Rock Bands just suck today. Gone are great tuneful songs with awesome riffs with a talented/charismatic lead singer & great guitarist that make chicks & dudes alike go crazy.....

What the hell do kids rebel against these days, download caps, DVR capacity? :hys:

Grunge was the last great musical movement. All great modern music was born of a cultural/political revolution.
These days culture is derivative and watered down. There is no movement to inspire great music. No one believes strongly enough in anything, and no one is pissed off enough about anything to bang it out in a song. They're too busy writing house music about dancing and fucking.

Encouragement is always a good thing, and just the act of playing / writing music with like minded individuals IS fun. Probably the most enjoyable aspect of the entire process.

But, how come "we were in the right place at the right time" never gets discussed in motivational quotes like this? The folks standing in line at AI tryouts, and the kids in their garages have always been, and always will be, 2 entirely separate entities. And both have gatekeepers telling them 'nope, not good enough'. They just run into them at different times.

:) When was the last time that rock had a defining moment that could be considered rebellious?

I'd argue that BM is as close as you'll get to this general attitude.

I have to disagree. I see where you're coming from but GnR wouldn't even be a blip on the charts nowadays. I can't see kids that are into Miley Cyrus and Little Wayne counting down the days for the new GnR record to come out. I don't care how talented you are in modern times, rock music, in the likes of GnR, would not get "big". It's just not popular or "in style" enough right now.

This is not necessarily true. There are bands like Foxy Shazam rocking the fuck out of the world right now and not everyone knows who they are. It is a crying shame. I love GNR, but Foxy is like Queen, Zep and well a whole bunch of cool rolled into one and Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke are on the radio. People need to get out there and support music, or it will die. Go see shows, even if you don't know the band. If you hear something you like, share it. Get it on FB or whatever so other people hear it. Take your friends, do whatever. It is the only way. I am at the point where I go alone now if I have to, because I really don't give a fuck anymore. I jones for a good show.

This is a good reminder to get out there and support it. Don't just tell a friend, bring them all to shows! This is real music, not what kids are seeing on TV.

who says all those people in line at the convention center don't rock out in their garages every weekend?

it's more likely that most of them do.

come down from 50,000 feet dave.

Agree 103%...........I mean, the guy has bypassed young Russian orphans and is saving old, well used, and significant recording equipment from L.A.

The only thing he got right was using Nirvana and suck in the same story...lol

JK I kinda liked alot of their stuff and I understand his point.
