Dave Grohl hits the nail on the head

Couldn't agree more...

Only problem is "doing it Grohl's way" no longer sells airtime marketing hype, it doesn't generate bottom line profits to the networks, it's not corporately conducive. And furthermore, kids today are so umbilically tied to their fuckin' iPhones and internet and NetFlix and TV and everything else, jamming out shit in a garage is too much work. They'd prefer to get highscores on Guitar Hero than actually rock the fuck out.

Also, it helps to NOT suck.
In 2013 it helps to suck if you want to be successful.

Nirvana would get nowhere today.

That was a pretty good thing to say. However, I don't think it applies to as strongly today as it did when Nirvana started though? Kids dont' really buy CD's anymore and most find music free online. Also, I don't think most of them know how to interact person to person as well either. That's just my opinion. How friggin old does that sound? I think I just officially turned into my father?

Too many people today feel quite comfortable stealing music, destroying the business, and telling themselves some self justifying bullshit to make it ok.

I know what you mean. Have you noticed how many talents being discarded by the wayside? And the whole incest cover/sample mentality of it all? It is not one of those programs that is about creating new music that I've come across.

Yeah, but the record companies had their chance and didn't adapt. $15 for a cd with the band only getting $1 or less is bullshit. I'd rather give that money to the band.

I myself can't stand the voice or American idol. Not really sure they are ruining music, but they are not helping much.

To me, Grohl is saying to get together with some friends and have fun. He isn't necessarily talking about "making it" or giving a recipe for success. It's not about what someone in the bizz thinks of your music, your art. It's about jamming with friends and making some "noise".

I love Dave Grohl. He is constantly saying exactly what I'm thinking. Maybe it is because we are close in age or something.

My kid plays Skrillex, Miley Cyrus, or Kanye and I just don't get it. Same with folks at my work that try to convince me that every song from The Killers is the ultimate in lyrical and musical content.

I can't speak for anyone but my own generation. We salivated over DeMartini and Lynch solos and went over to each other's houses to thumb thru albums and make "mix tapes". We wrote crappy songs about girls while wearing jeans jackets covered in buttons and bandanas around our necks. I used to love listening to an album while reading the lyrics, notes, etc.

Everything is so polished these days and I think the imperfections are something we miss a bit (just my opinion). I think it is way too easy to make recordings these days. Most of us who did recording had a Tascam and had to go thru a million steps to get a recording on a CD. :) These days anyone can record and put out garbage.

That was a long rant just to basically say that someone like Dave Grohl appreciates the way things used to be.

I like what Dave Grohl is saying but my experience with Nirvana was not a good one.In the early 90's I was in a band called Judgment. We were a progressive metal band similar to Queensryche, Dream Theater, and Fates Warning. All those bands at that time were enjoying a lot of success.
My band received major label interest from BMG USA.They had A&R guys come up to Toronto to watch us play, and they were telling us it was just a matter of time before they sign us.It was a very exciting time for us especially since we were from Canada. Some month's past by and they contacted us, telling us they wanted us to write some songs more in the vein of Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. This subsequently led to the break up of the band and the rest is history.Whether it was bands that were getting signed at the time ,or bands that were just playing in bars ,it was Nirvana's music that led to the dumbing down of a lot of music at that time.

Agree. Then again, I'd take another grunge movement over what's happening in music today.

I respect his belief... and I agree and wish what he said was true... unfortunately things just don't happen that way anymore :(
