anybody want to tell me how do to a depth mod on my hr25?? could send it out but ive done some mods before and am proficient with soldering and what not , I cant read schematics at all so any help would be great , its like $5 in parts so would rather do it myself..thanks

heres some gut shots...was gonna drill new hole for pot somewhere or ditch a speaker jack dont need 2 ever..

try a 220k with a .0047 cap over it in the feedback loop or use a 1 meg pot and the 0047 cap if you want to be able to adjust it.

attach right where it says feedback im assuming? thanks

What does the depth mod do? I've heard that Mike Soldano doesn't really love the mod.

I'm a Soldano Hot Rod 25 owner myself and love the amp more than any amp I've bought in a long while. The depth mod does interest me.

Basically it's an additional bass control that after the power amp, I like having as much low end available as possible and it's a easy mod, so I'm going to put it in , does it really need it ? Not really..

Yea remove feedback wire and insert in series and give it a shot.

I suggest trying a few different caps. Like a .001, .002, .003... I really like the .003uF

Think of it as a presence control for the low end.

It should be useful on a 25 watter or 50 watter. Got it done on my HR50+ and it was definitely beneficial. My SLO100 didn't seem to need it though.

OK, so here's the deal:
Picked up an HR25 about a year ago, and yes it's an amazing amp!!
I had read where Mike Soldano hates the depth mod, but I figured WTF, Mike's a 90's guy and it's 2015. I'm gonna add a depth mod to my HR25, cause it'll be better right??

WRONG!!!!

I took out the speaker jack closest to the little PCB board and put in a 1 meg pot for the resonance control with a cap.
I tried everything: .0068uf, .0047uf, .0033uf, .0022uf and they all sucked vs the depth @ zero and the bass control on the amp turned up.
There's something going on in the circuit when you have the bass @ 7 or 8 vs 3 or 4 with the depth turned up. It just sounded better with the depth off and the bass turned up.
This is with a 4x12 with greenbacks and a 4x12 with V30's. Same result with both cabs.

I've added a depth / resonance mod to lots of amps over the years, and it's usually pretty cool. Not this time!

Moral of the story: I'm not smarter than Mike Soldano & neither are you!!

Don't waste your time. The amp is perfect the way it is.

Honest!!

What cab are you using?

With the right cab you should'nt need the depth Mod

I learned this myself with having Mike add it to my SLO

Since getting (2) Soldano 2x12's i never use it

yeah I was thinking doesnt really need it but wanted to throw it in there anyway...its got tons more low end then any of the new low watt heads by a long shot...im prob going to send it back to them for a clean ch. mod anyway so might just have them put it in anyway , cant hurt..or ill do it myself its pretty basic as mods go, interesting to hear it doesnt really do anything though...we'll see..

No, it definatley does exactly what you would expect it to do. But in my case, it just wasn't better than the stock amp.
Like I said, the amp is voiced really nicely, and when you turn the bass control up, it never seems to get flubby. There's also a certain character to the overdrive on the lead channel with the bass turned up that goes away when you turn the bass down and add back the bottom end with the depth control. I guess because the bass control works in the preamp, and the depth works in the power amp.

If your going to send the amp in to Soldano, might as well get it done so you can check it out for yourself. I don't think it would cost too much if they're already in there doing a clean ch. mod.

If you do it yourself, I thought the .0047uf cap sounded the best of the values I tried. I think that's the value Soldano uses as well.

One other thing too, looks like the amp was specifically voiced around the Sovtek 5881 tubes. I've tried all kinds of CP and NOS 6L6's in this thing, and to me it just sounds "right" with the stock 5881's.

YMMV
